The benefits of going to a lower rear end is performance but you'll give up mileage. The MPG will vary depending on how radical of a rear end change you make. You are at 3.21. You can go to 3.55...3.92...4.10 and beyond. If you're going to do maximum towing I would at least get the 3.92's. The other thing you'll give up is top end but you'll gain bottom end.

The options for the 8.25" are:

3.21, 3.55, 3.90, 4.10, and 4.56:1

I've gone from 3.55 - 3.90 - 4.10:1 (for larger tires) but the biggest item to look at is if your differential is a LSD (Limited Slip Differential) or a "One-Legger".
