Subject: What's this air pump? 1990 3.9 IP: Logged
Message: My 90 3.9 DAK has a belt driven air pump to introduce fresh air into exhaust system. Is there any worthwhile gain in performance to remove it? Will car run ok? Is it legal being emissions and all that? Anybody else have one or removed one?
Thanks

Message: Hey CTWWW. You won't see any noticeable gains from removing the air pump, at least so far as I know. It will hurt your emissions to remove it, however. I had my air pump and its valves go out on my '89, and couldn't pass emissions until I replaced them. I believe it is illegal to remove them from pollution controlled vehicles, as well.

Message: That pump you are referring to is the "smog pump" which does flow air into the exhaust. It does require a belt to drive it, thus taking some of your hp's. I cut off that belt and there was a tiny increase, not a whole lot. My county doesnt do emission testing so I am fine with it. I did this about 2 years ago and the truck runs fine without it.
