Under acceleration, my 99 slt 4x4,318, puts out a lot of pinging noise, and doesn''t get off very fast. It feels as though it isn't getting the power to the wheels. I have an K&N air filter in it, but no other modifications. What specifically should I add to clean up the noise?
As well, I sometimes get a cross fire problem, particularly in the wet, and the dealer has been unable to fix. Should I try performance wires,or is it a control module issue?

If it's that severe, take your airhat off, crack the throttle blades all the way open (engine off), and see if there's any oil puddles on the bottom of the intake manifold (use a flashlight for this...don't drop it though).

If there's a puddle or really thick coating of oil, that's a blown belly-pan gasket. (Dealer warranty fix)

A good of plug wires, Autolite 3923 Spark Plugs, and one grade higher on fuel may help you on in the interim though.

Check your belly pan gasket (intake manifold). Look down through the throttle bores to the bottom. If you see what looks like a puddle of oil take it to your dealer for the fix. There is a TSB.

Change and reroute your spark plug wires. There is also a TSB for the reroute.

Change your spark plugs to Autolite 3923's.

Change your thermostat to a Robertshaw 755-180.

Check for any other vacuum leaks.

I did have the belly pan gasket fixed, under warranty. The dealer indicated the problem occured because the belly pan was torqued down too hard at the factory, and that it shouldn't happen again. Should I be looking for a repeat problem here?

The wires have already been rerouted, and insulated, so spark plugs and thermostat next. Thanks

Yes, check again. That stupid belly pan is weakest link in the manifold. It may have sprung another leak.

Also, what Bernd suggested. Try 89 octane and see what happens. That's a temporary cure though. I would try plugs and t-stat so I wouldn't have to keep buying the expensive gas.
