Subject: speed limiter removed
IP: Logged

Message:
Since I've had my 00' 4.7 it's had a problem with dying when the temperature and humidity are just right. So I took it to the dodge dealer a few months ago, after fighting with them for a year, and they finally reprogrammed the computer. It set the idle a little higher and now it's fine, but now there is no speed limiter. Don't get me wrong, this is a good thing. Anyway, I was driving home from college the other night and hit a long sraight away. Needless to say I hit 110 mph and it was still climbing. Has anyone else had such luck?

Hasn't there been some people come on here sayin they've had no computer adjustments but they've had the 98mph speed limiter but once in a blue moon they seem to hit 100+ speeds but only every once in awhile?

my 97 V6er seems to quit pulling at about 100MPH. I guess the speed limiter is kicked in.
But right now I can't tell how fast I'm going.(bad instrument cluster)

I have a 98mph speed limiter on mine and I'm going to pay Mike Leach $400 bucks to reprogram it. I'd say you caught quite a break.

2 chambered flowmaster, drop-in K&N air filter, synthetic mobil 1, just sent my chip to mike leach for flashing, when it comes back I'm putting a cold air intake, 180 T-stat and autolite plugs in it at the same time.

Why is the stupid thing there anyway?? Does anyone know the honest answer? I'm tired of my face diving at the steering wheel every time it kicks in.

It's there because the tires can't support a 4200 lb truck cruising at speed for sustained periods of time. The trucks with no tire & handling package (and therefore the cheap-ass tires) are limited to 98 mph. The trucks with the tire & handling package (with the marginally less-cheap tires) are limited to 117 mph.

Otherwise every punk-ass who decided to test top end would end up de-laminating his tires and having a 140 mph roll-over. Then his punk-ass parents would sue Daimler Chrysler and they'd go bankrupt and have to stop producing the Dakota.

So, basically, it's there for the idiots who can drive fast but can't afford speed-rated tires.

Want more info on speed ratings and special tires? Go to tirerack.com or discouttiredirect.com and read up on the tech tips.

Alex,
I've got the tire/handling package. That, besides the 4.7, was one of the mandatory options. Rear sway bar, 255/65/16s...and mine pukes out at 98 MPH. Hmmmm.

On previous threads about this,

It was decided that it was the 5-SPEED vs. AUTO!

The 5-spd-ers, (including me), seemed to have the 117 limiter. YOu know, could have something to do with the LSD rear end?

no, it's not due to 5-sp vs. automatic. i have seen on this board several other trucks just like mine with a speed limiter higher than mine which is 98. same year model, same emissions, automatic, everything the same except for the speed limiter.

i read a week or so ago that it had to do with the driveshaft. something it vibrated after a certain speed so they lowered the limit on some. doesnt make much sense, but none of this makes any sense anyway.

My Dakota is a 2002 cc 4x4, and it has the auto with the tire and handling package (265/70/16) and I have had it to 112 with the od on and there is still tons more rpm to go. It will run up to 110 like nothing and starts to run out of juice in od at about 112 mph, and there isnt the slightest vibration, feels like 55 mph to me!

Strange. With a few exceptions there does seem to be some common ground with the following options:
4.7
45RFE auto
2WD

The 4WD and V6 trucks don't seem to have it, are they using a steel driveshaft or a shorter version of the aluminum 2WD piece? Poll Time!!

My driveshaft is a two piece steel. I'd much rather have a one piece aluminum or carbon fiber. I know the aluminum would have to be pretty thick but still. It'd be much more simple than a steel two piece. My truck is a 2wd 5spd 4.7L

Anyone know the specs for a one piece aluminum or carbon fiber? Anyone?

My limiter kicked in at 113 mph. Freaked me out at first because I thought something got trashed. I don't really need to go that fast, so having the limiter doesn't bother me. I was told by a mechanic that you have to be careful doing sustained high speed runs because the vibration of the engine can crack the alternator housing. First time I heard that, so I don't know how valid it is.

my 98 rc v6 always cuts off at 110 mph. I did the little "turn the key to the on position" trick and recorded my last rpm reading (4000 rpms in 4th gear).... went home and did some math and figured i did 131 mph with still a little room to go. That was also naturally aspirated..... and on good tires.

4X4's = 115/117mph limiter

2X4's = 98/99mph limiter

Has to do w/driveline strength,,or something like that,,doesn't matter what tire handling package you have or motor... This is what 'I think'.
