Subject: Lakewood Traction Bar Question IP: Logged
Message: OK just picked up a set of the chrome Lakewood Universal Traction bars for 29.99 at Autozone. And included are the most pathetic instructions i have ever seen. Basically they say put them on. Does anyone have pictures of what they look like installed? I understand the basic concept but don't want to install the backwards or something equally lame
Thanks

Message: The angled tips go towards the front. The rubber snubbers bolt in through the forward-most hole (don't forget the lock washers). The flanges that protrude upwards go on either side of the leafspring retainer plate. You want the bars to be as far forward as possible, so the rear flange needs to be tight up against the spring plate as possible. Put the u-bolts over the leafs, then down thru the holes, add lock-washers and nuts and tighten them until you think they are going to break. I had mine start to slip backwards on me and I have had to re-tighten them.
If you really want to get fancy, take some 1/4" steel bar, cut it to the length of the flanges and drill holes in each piece to match the u-bolt holes. Stack 3 or 4 of them up between the rear flange and the bottom leaf. Then run the u-bolt down thru them and into the traction bar. You basically want to have the snubbers as close to the leaf as possible. These shims will basically lower the rear of the bar while jacking up the front. This will help it "bottom out" sooner and start pushing your tires into the pavement quicker.
If you want pics, e-mail me and I will try to send you some.

Message: Thanks
I found a set of spring clamps that came with four THICK plates (1/4) already drilled only cost $10. I was really excited to avoid any fabrication. But of course the holes in the plates are ovalized but in the wrong direction. So i went at them with the dremel, 10 cut-off disks later they will fit (i just opened one end on each one to allow the Lakewood U bolts to fit. I also ordered taller snubbers from Summit (plus they match my truck RED) The snubbers that came with the bars are about 1 3/4 the ones i ordered are 2 1/8. Hope fully those in conjunction with my spacers should get the tolerences correct.

Message: If you get some SOS replacement arm bushings they are quite a bit longer than the bumpers that come with the bars. I took a razor to trim them to a perfect 1/2" clearance. I think that they were only $6 a pice and do the job well. Beats cutting and drilling steel bar.

Message: Installed them
They look sweet!!!
Did one hard launch still left rubber in first and second until i let off. But Zero wheel hop.
I have about one index fingers width between the snubber and the leaf spring. When my Red snubbers arrive from summit there should be less then 1/4.
Very happy for $29.99

Message: If they are on there correctly how could they do jack sh!t?
The torque moves the spring the spring moves the bar into the spring and the spring can move no further Viola, some kind of jack happens.
My wheel still spins but there is no hopping and the "launch' "feels" more solid. Especially after i installed the Urethane 2 1/8" snubbers about 1/4 clearance

Message: Holy Crap!!! 4900 lbs??? I think you need to go to a scale and check again. Some of the Rams don't weigh that much. I'd guess about 4200-4400 lbs. At which point you've pretty much got my same truck and with a stick it's running about 15.8's to 15.4's depending on where your track is, and if it's an auto it may be slower.

Message: You probably need some spacers on the rear clamp to bring the bar closer. The snubbers are only maybe 1/2 inch bigger then the ones that came with the bars. The snubbers came from jegs or summit.
