MY 98 3.9l automatic has been runnig rich for a while now. i has gotten worse over the past few weeks. It now has 58,000miles on it. I just replaced the upstream O2 sensor, and did the v6 to v8 TB swap. The throttle body is off of a 99' dakota and has good sensors on it. I completely took it apart and cleaned it throughly before installing it. It Runs great, but it is running rich still. it smells like sulfer(rotten eggs) all of the time. Anybody know what else might be wrong. Let me know please. Thanks, Chris

Your Catalytic converter is bad...Replace it. When it gets clogged it smells of sulphur and rotten eggs...

I had the cat replaced feb 1, 2001. The dealer wants $70.00 to diagnos the problem. I did not want to spend it but i guess i will have to. I will try a different dealer first. Thanks, Chris

hmm, the only thing that I know of that would cause your truck to smell like that is a clogged cat...That would explain the engine running rich because there is a lot of pressure building up in the engine. The sulphur smell is the innards of the cat getting too hot from it being clogged and burning up...but like I said, it is the only reason that "I" know of.

Thanks, I WILL call a few dealers and see what they want to look at at it and how long it will take them. i hate dealers, the last time i was there for an exhaust leak, they broke off a exhaust manifold bolt, then they broke their tool tring to remove it. they had to replace the head and had my truck for 5 days. only good thing was i got a 2001 stratus to drive since they messed up. well i will see what happens now. Chris.

I have the exact same problem chris with my 98 3.9. I had my trottle body cleaned and pcm flashed last fall. It later started stinking pretty bad from dec to Febuary. I brought it back to the dealer to check the cat and they said that the cat is not causing the problem. They said the trottle body needed to be clean bad and need to flash the pcm. How often are you supposed to clean the dam trottle body? I think every 4 or 5 months is excessive. My truck now stinks only when going up steep hills. This bugs me...I tried higher octane gas, and even octane boost additive but it still sticks going up hills. I hate going back to the dealer as they have charged me $300.00 each time for a trottle body cleaning and a flash for the pcm when all they are probably doing is pouring some carbourater cleaner down the trottlebody.

It does not make any sense that this problem would be throttle body related. The ONLY thing that smells like sulphur on the truck is the gunk inside the catalytic converter when it gets clogged and burns, this I am sure of. A buddy of mine was having very bad idle problems, but it drove alright (a little rough though) and he was going through gas like it was going outta style. And the was the stench of boiled eggs. He took it to a muffler shop and they cut out the cat and replaced it. VIOLA, no idle problems, no driving problems, and his gas mileage went back to normal. Forget the dealer, go to a muffler shop, they will tell you...

I agree that is not the throttle body because it has smelled for a few weeks. I just replaced the Throttle body Three days ago and it was spotless before i put it on. i have tried diferent grades of gas from diff gas stations. no diff. just costs more. The only reason i am going to the dealer is that if it is the cat they have to replaceit free of charge. Muffler shop will charge you. I do not like the idea of eliminating the cat of i would of done that. eventually i will get a high flow cat but $$ issues are stoping me. i hate dealers but they hopefully can tell me whats wrong. plus i know someone in the parts dept. Will see what is wrong thursday. i am getting up at 7:00 to take it in. Thanks chris

good luck!! If they tell you that it is not the cat, tell them they are full of beans and take it to another dealership...Or you can take it to a muffler shop, like Midas that does free diagnoses to find the problem, then take your findings to the dealer.

If it is the CAT, it should be covered under the emissions equipment warranty, which typically runs a lot longer than your regular warranty.

I just got back from the dealership. $73.00. They told me it is a bad o2 sensor. I said i just replaced it. He told me that it is a faulty sensor. "We will take care of it it for you if you want. we have the parts." i said how much. $275.00!!! Bull@$#%. i just bought the senor last week so i went back to murrays with the service write up and my recipet. I had to buy a new sensor and have to take the faulty one back and they will refund my money. If this dont work then the dealer will hear from me till they find and fix the real problem. (cat) Will see tomorrow when i pick up the new sensor and replace it. Chris
