Hey y'all, I gotta question for ya. Can anyone tell me what a harmonic dampener is?
Also, my butt-buddy Pet Me wanted to know if our drive shafts are aluminum or tin foil? And if they're the aluminum, why's mine got rust on it?

Thanks in advance!

Don't know about the driveshafts, depending on what year it's aluminum or steel. A Harmonic Dampener, also called a Harmonic Balancer, is a heavy disc usually made of steel that is pressed on to the front of the crankshaft. If you look at the front of your engine find the big pulley on the bottom of the engine, below where the fan connects. That is the crank pulley behind the pulley is the dampener. It is a weight that smoothes out the engine and helps the crank spin straight and true. Usually certain engines require dampeners of certain weight and size. If the dampener is wrong or is not installed perfectly striaght the engine will shake itself apart.

I was wondering, then, what is the "fly wheel" on an engine?

Thanks for your help!

A flywheel is a large disc-shaped gear bolted to the rear end of the crankshaft. When the starter engages the flywheel it turns the crankshaft thus aiding in starting of the engine.

The flywheel has either a torque converter or a clutch attached to it, depends on if you have a manual Trans,or automatic.

The flywheels other purpose is to help counter balance the crank shaft to also help stop vibration, therefore making more HP.
