Subject: Valve Spring Replacement IP: Logged
Message: Are the stock springs easy to replace? I'm putting some 6500 springs on and didn't know how difficult it was. How long would it take and do I have to adjust the valves or just swap the springs and thats it?
~Mike~
P.S. The reason I'm doin this Marty at KRC recommended I do the swap cuz I was having a problem of smacking the rev limiter after I installed my new PCM, so I'm gettin my rev-limit bumped up to 6000 and he said all I needed to run that high were new springs.

Message: I haven't but I think you need a special tool to remove the spring and to re-install them. You also need some kind of air compressor to keep pressure in the cylinder to keep the valves from dropping. Also removal of the Rockers and then needing to re-adjust them after. Good Luck.

Message: Discount or Pep Boys will have the item. You have to rotate the motor to so the valves are completely closed on the cylinder your working on. Motor can only be rotated one way.

Message: It's not too bad a job but you do need some special tools, and you should check the tension and installed height of the springs to make sure everythings right. Unless you are very mechanically inclined you should probably have someone who is experianced help you out. It's pretty straightforward but if you do it wrong your engines junk.

Message: What engine? I assume its not the 4.7 when you say you rockers anyway the guys above are right, you need air,a heads on valve spring remover and a air line with a chuck to fit into the spark plug hole.It can be a real snarley job depending on whats in the way.I think the worst vehicle I ever had to do that to was a chev camper man that was cramped, needed 3 different valve spring compressors to get the springs off,if ya need some tips let me know, heres one anyway hit the valve springs with a hammer to loosen up the retainers before you take them off,of course this is done after the rockers are off :) and might aswell install new valve seals while your at it
