Message: i beleve you have 3 cats on yours. one on each manifold, and one after the y-pipe.
i only have 1 cat on my 98 5.2, and i replaced it with a high flow cat, and didnt really notice much of a differance.
if i were you, i'd just replace the muffler, and look into a intake of some sort.

Message: So if you have a '01/4.7 with 3 cats would two carsound cats, and two single chamber mufflers give you the best flow?

Message: Bad news: "Under Federal EPA regulation, replacement of original catalytic converters is allowed only if the original converter(s) is missing, or the vehicle has more than 50,000 miles or is at least five years old and the need for a replacement has been established and documented, or a local inspection program has determined the existing converter is in need of replacement."
Good news: Like everything else, there are ways to "work" the system. One of those is if you can swap the catalytic converter yourself. However, this is assuming that you have sufficient time before having some form of visual inspection for state smog validation.
