Subject: 4.7 Exhaust and Changing Tips IP: Logged
Message: I have a FM SUV 50 Series single in, dual out with 2 1/2 inch mandrell bent pipes and dual 3 inch angle cut tips.
I wanted to deepen the sound of the exhaust and visited my local muffler shop and he said by going to 4 inch tips, the sound isn't gonna change.
Has anyone gone from 3 to 4 inch tips and noticed a deeper tone from your exhaust sound?
He said maybe 5 inch tips would make a difference but IMHO, that seems a little too big, would look like I'm shooting grapefruits out my exhaust.
BTW, he's done quite a few DAKs (and QCs at that)...seems lately, everyone is going for Vortex mufflers, but removing the steel wool/fiberglass packing for that 'sound' that everyone wants....what exactly is that sound? (hopefully not no stinking Neon sound with a 7 inch coffee can sticking out the back)
Has anyone done the above with a Vortex...if so, what does it sound like?
Thanks...

Message: I just spoke with Flowmaster re: tips
Their opinion differes from my muffler shop, where FM says going from a 3 inch tip to a 4 inch tip will indeed change the sound of your exhaust, due to the 'megaphone' theory and larger diameter of the tips...thoughts on this? Anyone with real world experience to prove this out?
BTW, I asked which of all their mufflers they offer, would give the best HP/TQ gains for a 4.7
After their line that all mufflers offer the same gains (the all differ on sound though), 2 different techs came clean and said their best flowing (aka more power) application is their 70 Series Big Block II due to the fact that it has a longer, bigger case and largest tuning chamber.
Their 2nd best muffler for gains (and more deeper sound) is their SUV 50 Series...some 5 inches shorter than the 70 Series with a 6 inch tuning
chamber -vs- 12 inches on the 70 series
They still quote 5-7% gain in HP/TQ across their model line.

Message: TEAMFAST: I've seen a web page saying the Vortex muffler has packing (wether is be steel wool type or fiberglass)...I can't find that page now, via various engine searches.
I do know Maremont offers a Cherry Bomb Turbo and Turbo Tunned mufflers that look to have the baffles you describe, yet I can't see anywheres where they list the 'Vortex' muffler product and describe it's inner make up...regardless, I'll stick with my Flowmaster SUV 50 series muffler.
Still looking for real world experience from someone who went from 3 inch tips to 4 inch tips, and if the exhaust note did indeed deepen?

Message: Vortex Cherry Bomb Mufflers...
Here is that URL that details there is stainless steel wool and fiberglass packing in the Vortex muffler:
http://masterm.www3.50megs.com/vortexkits.html
Pasting from that link:
1. Engine exhaust enters muffler.
2. Unique Flow Divider design splits exhaust into two streams without reducing flow.
3. Higher frequency sound waves dissipate into stainless steel wool and fiberglass.
4. Center of Flow Divider (the "vortex") provides further sound reduction.
5. Second Flow Divider splits the exhaust into two streams.
6. The two exhaust streams merge exit the muffler. The result is a smooth, mellow performance sound.
As mentioned, local muffler shop says a lot of DAK owners are putting on this muffler but removing the steel wool/fiberglass packing for a great sounding exhaust.
This URL claims the Vortex is a higher flowing muffler than any Flowmaster....all marketing hype or does anyone know of some dyno numbers to back this claim up? Better flow should equal better HP/TQ gains.

Message: I'm running the 70 series Flowmaster on my truck. The sound is pretty mellow but it still sounds better than stock. I put it on to replace the Gibson muffler that came with the Mopar cat-back system. The Gibson killed all my low end torque and it made the truck sound like a low-compression garbage truck! The 70 series got some of the torque back... but not all of it. Although it's pretty quiet, the truck still produces a deep tone and isn't as "rasty" sounding as some of the mufflers out there. I will admit though, that I like my ride to be a little quieter than most "hot-rodders" on the street. I'm quite happy with it.

Message: Duner
Does your 70 series have the inlet in the center of the muffler or to the right of center? Or does it even matter?

Message: I don't remember exactly without crawling under it. I seem to remember that it's slightly off center on both inlet and outlet. It doesn't really matter that much I guess. The Gibson was a round muffler which was on center and I had no problems putting the Flowmaster into the exact same spot. The Flowmaster was even the same length as the Gibson - which made it even easier.

Message: Changing your tips WILL change the sound of the exhaust,,,BUT when in your case Mase,,you wouldn't notice a diff. IMO. I could set you up the equipment and software to the 'real world' experiment if you got a couple thousand dollars laying around. Heck I could spec. it out down to the cables in a quote if you want me to!
But you won't notice it. If you want a deeper sound go w/the Flow. 2 chamber,,,which,,,I think is the 40 series (someone correct me if I'm wrong!). This is what I have on my truck, w/the same exhuast down to the tips as you have. It has a great deep rumble to it,, and has just enought 'pop' in it when you left off gas at high rpm's.
Hope this helps.-- P.S. I was serious if anyone's looks for some Dynamic Signal Acquistion hardware/software!

Message: Andy, thanks for the feedback, gotta pass on the offer though...not sure if I should change out the 3 inch tips for 4 inch, or spend a little more and just swap out the muffler...want to keep what ever gains I picked up with the SUV 50 series but want a deeper 'rumble' and some quiet in the cab.
Bri: For the Flowmaster product line, this URL lists all their mufflers and has wav files to hear each application:
http://www.flowmastermufflers.com/web10/productsf5.html
Their Series 70 Big Block II muffler should be their quietest, and if one was to believe their techs (not all their techs will verify this), should also be their best flowing DAK muffler for best HP/TQ gains (longer, wider casing with 12 'tuning' chambers).
I went through 4-5 techs asking which muffler provided the best HP/TQ gains regardless of sound (didn't mention too loud or too low), and finally got two different techs who said the longer/wider mufflers flow the best...(the 70 Series BB II)
