Message: Has anybody heard of "performance catalytic converters"? A guy at a performance store was trying to sell me one and said "that they were great, but the engine light will always be on". Sounds fishy to me. Thanks.

Message: If yours is a 2000 4.7 they really like the high flow cats. Doubt the check engine light will be on if the cat is doing its job.

Message: From my experience in dealing with cats, as soon as the sensor goes off that senses a change in factory emissions, that light will come on. That guy was probably right. That light is supposed to come one once in a long while, and it usually just means to have your emissions connections checked for servicing at the dealership. Its just another way to get you, your money, and your precious hard working truck into the shop (again) for some servicing. It doesnt necessarily mean that anything is wrong. The light can be reset by a competent mechanic and it will turn off.
When I cut out my cat, that light came on because it sensed a change to the emissions in my truck. The next time I had my truck's fuel injectors cleaned out, the mechanic offered to turn off that light for me. Took about 60 seconds.
Performace cats are nice because they are free flowing (if there is such a thing!) more than OEM cats. Nicer performance, mpg's, hp's, etc. But should also have a higher flowing muffler, headers, custom pipes, etc. If you plan on getting a complete upgrade exhaust system, I would hold out and get it all done at the same time, rather than piece by piece.

did removing your third cat trip a MIL light on yours? I'm getting real close to omitting mine also.
Thanks for your reply,

Message: No check engine because they don't monitor the third cat in the main pipe. It is sitting in my back yard. I just go the muffler guy to take it out and put in a new pipe. Works wonders for the sound and better power to boot.

Message: For those of you who want to omit the cat,try this little trick! On the after cat(back ones)oxygen sensors, leave them out of the pipes plug the hole and wrap the o2 sensors in aluminum foil and tie them to the inside of the frame.it worked on mine, and i have never seen the check engine light!!!!!

Message: May not see a check engine light but if it doesn't see a propor voltage then it tries to compensate. That usualy means a rougher idle and poorer fuel milage.

Message: Hey Mike D. and CW I have a question. When you had the third cat removed, was there any wiring you had to deal with? That sounds like something I might be interested in doing to my '01 QC. Would probably compliment my exhaust system nicely! Also, do you have any emission tests where you live? Did it affect your emissions at all?
Thanks in advance for any response!

Regardless of whether you have emissions testing, it is a federal felony to remove or disable any emissions device, punishable by a $2,500 fine. Just so you know what you're doing.
It will raise emissions.

Message: Thanks for the response BOB, that was why I had asked those questions! I want to keep my truck legal, and was not sure if removing the third cat would be illegal as the truck still has two other cats on it.
Again, thank you so much for setting me straight.
