Forget all that you know about increasing HP
and focus on the other end of the spectrum.
The power to weight ratio of a vehicle is often
changed by looking for power gains, but I say
no more my friend! Grab your socket set and
lets look at the wonderful world of weight
reduction...
First thing you may have is a definate
advantage if yuo have a 6
with engine weight, shyt with 2 less cylinders
and a smaller block you save about 300 lbs. I
hope you have a reg cab, cuz that saves
another 300! Way to go look at that ratio
increase!
Next youll want to remove that passenger
seat, no free rides here! Time: 10min

Remove the spare tyre from under the
bed...hey another 50lbs or so Time: 3 min

Always run with a 1/4 tank of gas....I cannot
stress this enough. especially with your
automatic transmission, cracking the rear
loose isnt likely so keep it low and you will be
rewarded with speed!

I hope you are getting some ideas...keep
reading!

Next look for any loose objects in your
cab....Jacks, amps, owners manuals, spare
change, porno mags, these will all slow you
down so toss it!

Remove the following items in order of
importance to you, you dont have to remove
them all, but if you want speed...go for it!
pedal covers, door trim, door glass, interior
carpeting, shifter knob, center console, radio,
rear view mirror, are you getting the picture?

WARNING!:Do not remove the rear glass as
this will cause a blow by effect making it
extremely difficult to drive without some kind of
eye protection.

Finally it would be wise to step on the
treadmill a few days a week, hey the driver
may have to be weight reduced as well!

So lets consider how much weight we have
reduced...lots and you know what the best part
of all this is??? It didnt cost you a dime! Not a
measly penny! That is the best upgrade i can
think of! shyt I just shaved a tenth off your 1/4
mile time....

I hope these tips will help you to keep up to
the v8 boys when it comes time to start the
showdown...

Well kiddies, I hope you enjoyed this brief
overview of the world of weight reduction, next
week we will look at carbon fibre dash
needles, low weight oils and car wax that
actually increases gas mileage.

Its called the human RACE for somethin!

if you remove your hood it could be a plus in two ways, Direct cold air intake, and a lot less weight.

IntenseDak39, how good does the cowl induction hood work for performance. I am looking at a steel cowl hood or the fiberglass ram air hood from www.cervinis.com

you mean ya'll aren't doing that already?

juniork,
i know for a fact that the cowl does help lower temp. under the hood, but it doesn't help like a cowl hood is suppose to because i have mopar cold air induction kit closed off at the front of my truck. i purchased mine because i like the look of it. Not like one of those square chebby cowls, it follows the trucks curves really well. I just wish they made a fiberglass lift off version.

Actually the stuff TEAMFAST talked about removing would shave more then a tenth! Every 100 pounds of static weight will lose 1/10 on the 1/4 mile, and 10 pounds of rotating mass will do the same. So losing, the jack, spair, exhaust (behind the cat), tailgate, and rear bumper for racing will give you probably more like .3 for free, the free flowing exhaust may give another .1 or .2. There are big gains to be had with lighter wheels and tires, and slicks may be needed now anyway to get traction with the loss of weight over the rear. So with a socket set, 1 hr, and a new set of wheels and tires I'm sure you can cut a full sec off your 1/4 mile times. The original question was about gas mileage, which is tougher to improve with weight reduction, it would help around town, but once moving it has more to do with friction and areodynamics then weight.

Have you considered the possible major inconvenience caused by driving without a spare or jack for possible minor milage gains ? I can't resist poking a little fun, go ahead and call me gimpy if you think that's lame ! I think you both need a reality check.

Right, for mileage it's not the best thing, but for 10 minutes while waiting at the track it's definately worth it.

You could spray a bunch of bulk-head remover in side the cab? Also tie about 50 ft of flight line to the bumper. Put chromolly piston return springs in and upgrade the muffler bearings to the new lightweight platinum plus series.
This will most likely give you a savings of about 25 lbs
