It's time to change my oil again, (I try to change it every 3000 miles) and I run prolong engine lubricant in it. Im all about tring to prevent problems before they happen. I was wondering If this stuff really works or am I just wasting my money? Is it worth $15 every oil change? thanks

The answer is that they dont do anything. Prolong is being sued along with slick 50 and dura lube for 20,000,000.00 because of false advertizing. It turns out that private companies did indipendent tests they drained the oil and put prolong in and the ran it at a high rpm I think the engine lasted about 14 seconds. Duralube was like 12 and and slick 50 was under 10. They are all junk. Just use castrol syntec because they have a magnetic substance that has the oil stick to the cylinder walls for more protection in cold starts. The oil companies do all the reasearch and add what ever it takes to make there oil better. Your oil is all you need. The only additive that works is z-max. But you dont really need that either a good syntetic oil is all you need to have you truck run a long long time. See ya.

Garbage. It works just as good as changing your oil on a regular basis.

Not sure about this "blend" business. They won't tell you what % is dino oil and what % is synthetic. I've heard that it is only ~20% synthetic. It is too high priced if that is the case. Some synthetics are just untra refined dino oil based anyway. You want a blend? Pour in ~50% regular oil and the rest synthetic.
Mar, can you tell me more about this "magnetic" stuff in Castrol? I've heard of tacifiers to make the oil stick to the metal better but never heard of them using magnetism.

There was a good independent study on oils, and also one on filters that I got off this forum recently.

I think I saved the links, but at home and I'm at the job now.

I use Mobil 1, only, I think it's pure sythetic.

There was a lawsuit I reaD about that lost, so the companies oil companies could put the term synthetic on any refined oil legally.

I change my oil every 6 months, so full syntec is a big waste of money for me, the Quaker state seems to be very good. Great cold start and it keeps my engine clean. I only put about 3K miles in about 6 months.

We operate a large fleet of Gov't vehicles,(over 2,100) and have tested Prolong, Z-Max, Slick 50 and others. Vehicles were everything from patrol units to D8N Cat's. The results were suprising in that absolutely no difference was detected in fuel and oil consumption , engine life, failure rates and other parameters we analyzed. Our computerized fueling stations and scheduled maint. allow us to analyze all phases of the vehicles life. The sample of vehicles was at least 50 for each test. We also tested oils and found there to be no real difference between synthetics and conventional oils except that the synthetics decreased fuel consumption very slightly. With the high usage of our vehicles the test only lasted about 3 years. Some vehicles logged over 200K during this period. The only additive that showed a difference was the transmission additive Lubegard, it reduced trans failures by approx. 30% in the test group and reduced the complaints of converter shudder. The moral of this story...Change your oil regularly, use the right grade and save the money you would spend on snake oil and buy something for your truck!!

Does anyone have anything to say about the RESTORE product that claims to restore compression in cylinders? Recently I bought a 97 Honda Civic that has engine problems. The dealer run the CYLINDER LEAK DOWN TEST and it turned out that one cylinder leaks 46% and the rest 20%. Someone recommended the RESTORE product and I decided to give it a try. The car runs quicker and stronger now, but is this product as good as the label claims and really restores?

THERE ARE VERY FEW ADDITIVES THAT ACTUALY WORK, AND THE ONES THAT DO ARE ONLY TEMPARARY. YOU CANNOT FIX ANY MOVING METAL OBJECT WITH A LIQUID. THE ONLY THING YOU CAN DO IS SEAL,SOFTEN,QUIETEN OR LUBE. SOME WITH HIGHER DEGREES THAN OTHERS, BUT AS I SAID ITS ONLY TEMPARARY.THE ONLY PERMANANT FIX IS TO REPLACE, BUT IT SURE WOULD BE NICE THOUGH WOULDNT IT?

Why do posts get dug back up you say???????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's because if someone makes a BRAND NEW POST askinng a question some a$$weed will come along and tell them to go SEARCH first.

When someone does a SEARCH first and doesn't get all their questions answered they use the reply to post a new question.

There's nothing wrong with that is there???

Now that I've said that.
I'd like to say that I have tried the RESTORE ONCE and so did a friend ONCE.
After a few miles compression does come back (if you had problems with rings), power seems to come back, smokes less, less blow by etc.
But a few more miles and some hard driving (because you got your power back) you actually wind up with engine damage anyway. My friend and I both spun a bearing shortly after using ENGINE RESTORE.
It's been a while since this happened, but if you look at the stuff it's got metal flakes in it to BOND to the engine surfaces to fill SCRATCHES as it states.

Good luck.

If it screws up your bottom end, BRING BACK THIS POST and tell us.... he he he!!!

Texas Todd,

You have been on this site for a long time and I belive that you are a great guy, and I'd race you off the line anytime ... but I have to agree agree w/ Graphite.

--------------------------------------------------

Renata,

Are you referring to Engine Restorer by a private company (in silver can), or are you referring to Engine Restore by Valvoline (red plastic bottle)?

Assuming you are talking of Engine Restore, as I understand it, the product may be loaded with moly and "various metal particles", one of which may be graphite. These "particles" are supposed to be pushed/forced into the scratches in the cylinder walls from the heat and pressure of combustion. You can feel the material between your fingers. I do not like the idea of putting solids of any kind into the engine. It just seems like a bad idea. If the filter is doing it's job it will be loaded with this material rather quickly.

If anyone needs more information I will be happy to perform additional due dilligence.
