I ordered an Accel coil (p/n 140021) b/c it is a direct bolt in and next on the list is an MSD 6A (p/n 6200). I know the MSD universal (p/n 8873) harness is what I need to use but was wondering what has to be cut using this harness? If I order the Accel adapter harness (p/n 140021AH) for the later model Dakotas, can I use that instead of cutting the OEM wires?

Chuck, don't you have the same setup?

That all depends on whether you want to maintain the ability to go back to your stock coil or not. I have the MSD Blaster SS coil in close proximity to the stock coil. I cut both the primary coil wires off about 6" from the coil. I took the wire going to the ignition and distributor and routed those to the wiring harness for the MSD 6A. I put male ends on the 6" of wire that's left. That way my harness can plug into the Blaster or the stock coil.

Yes, i have the same set-up, kevin.

When I installed my ignition, I used the MSD 6a, universal adapter harness (p.n 8873), Accel coil (p/n 140021) and Accel coil adapter harness (p/n 140021AH).

Instead of cutting the factory coil wires, I cut the wires on the coil adapter harness and spliced in the wires from the MSD harness. All my stock wiring stayed intact and if I ever want to unplug my MSD all I have to do is spend 30 seconds and unplug the 8873 harness and reconnect the Accel harness.

If you check out the MSD diagram at http://www.intense99dak.com/msd.htm
Imagine using the Accel harness instead of the factory coil wires. The factory coil wire in the diagram would be on the right, out of the picture.

Chuck, the reason I was unsure is the Accel adapter harness is for the later model Dakotas? I am unclear on what plugs into the universal harness but what I think is that there is no way to plug it inline with the coil without cutting?

On the diagram, it looks like 4 splices, the black and orange coming from the coil and the red and white going too the coil. Are the black/orange and red/white splices with plugs part of the universal harness?

If I plug in the adapter harness and cut off the gray end, will the factory coil wire plug into the universal harness. I think, from looking at your diagram, that the red/white end might just plug into the universal harness?

Sorry, I'm a visual learner.

BTW, I ordered my Accel coil p/n 140021, did you open up the plug gap with that?

Kevin,

Have you checked with Jeg's, Accel or anyone to see if the Accel coil harness would work on your '95? If the harness doesn't fit then there's no way to install the MSD universal harness without splicing into the factory wires :-( If it fits, but is not needed, then personally I would get it to save my factory wiring.

Yes, the MSD universal adapter comes with the black & orange wires (with connector plug) and the red & white wires (with connector).

I'm not sure which gray you're talking about cutting off. If I am following you correctly on the rest of the paragraph though, it would not work. It sounds like what you're thinking about doing is plugging the coil wires (red & white)coming from the computer into the end of the 8873 harness without plugging the other end of the harness into the coil. If you mind trying to explain it again ... ;-)

As for spark plug gap, I'm running 0.050. You can gap the plugs at either 0.050 or 0.045. Try both gaps out and see which one works best for your Dak.

Chuck, thanks, you are right (last message was prior to the second cup of coffee), the gray plug I was talking about was on the 140021AH harness. The Accel super coil is a direct bolt in for the 96 and older Magnums, the 98 and up use a different style plug, hence the harness.

I sent an email to Mancini racing, they sell the Mopar Performance MSD6AL which has the connections on it already. Below is the link, I kind of like the black MSD anyway.

You don't need the 6AL. Our Dak's have PCM's that contain a rev limiter already.

the stock PCM has a rev limiter, I have the Mopar Performance PCM, i.e. no rev limiter. Besides, the 6AL was the lowest 6 series Mopar Performance MSD that Mancini Racing sells.

I like the looks of the black MSD box. Something different ;-) Have you heard back from Mancini yet? It would be great if you didn't have to cut any wiring.

Oh yea, to make a link type:

Mopar HP PCM's have rev limiters. The limit depends on the engine. It's the speed limiter that gets changed to 255 for all engines.
