Subject: Header Question IP: Logged
Message: When removing the stock exhaust manifolds on a 5.9L, how do the studs get removed? I haven't removed mine yet, since it's been around 10 degrees in the garage :) I need a wall heater! I have some Gibson headers that I hope to install this Friday, weather might go up to 60's. I did notice the Y-pipe seems to be a Bitc* to remove with the pre-cats.
The new 1.7 rr are nice, I did notice some performance increase but nothing to brag about. Maybe at this point 10-20hp at the wheels is not very noticeable. Down side is cost and more noise. It does sound more aggressive :)

Message: One way to remove studs; thread two nuts onto stud. with two wrenches tighten the nuts against each other. use one wrench on the inner nut to loosen the stud. If this doesnt work [it should] you could rent a stud puller from a auto parts store.

Message: Definetely, What b.good said...
I just got my headers installed last week. I had it done, I didn't want to wait. I'm not as young and ambitious as I used to be. My 1.7 RR are on the way, those I plan on doing myself. I am curious how well and smooth the idle is with the 1.7's.

Message: The idle is maybe a hair better with the new 1.7.
Getting some better valve springs should help your idle some.
Mike, Did a local shop install your headers? Do you think a nation wide muffler place could do a header job? (Midus,Meineke, ect.)
I got this pain in the Butt nut that will not come loose next to the pre-cat, It's to the point that I'm damaging the nut. I was thinking, maybe I could unscrew the drivers side exhaust manifold from the Y-pipe, that's if I don't run into the same problem that I'm having now with the passengers side. Then unbold the passengers side manifold from the engine then try and drop the whole Y-pipe giving me better access to the nut that holds the Y-pipe to the passengers side manifold. That's if I can also get the studs out to drop that manifold without actully removing the passengers side manifold.
Sounds like a muffler shop job to me, I hope they don't have to cut the Y-pipe just to get to the nut, then re-wield it :(
How long did it take the muffler shop to install the headers?

Message: I had a 4x4 shop in Boulder install them for me. I called two muffler shops and they didn't want to touch any custom installs. I dropped off the truck @ 7am, they gave me a ride to work and picked me up @ 5pm.. The truck was complete including my Gibson muffler. Great customer service....Good luck on the hardware problem..Sounds like a pain in the a$$...

Message: Andrew
after market headers use a flange to bolt to the head, this flange usually about 1/4 to 3/8" thick is not as thick as the factory manifolds around 2"
the factory studs are probably not threaded all the way to the bottom, this is why you would have to take the factory studs out and use bolts.

Message: Well, I called American Muffler yesterday. Sounds like they might do it, but they kept saying I'll have to look at it and it'such a big job. That means big bucks! Err, I figured that I could cut the bolt off since the headers come with new bolts that are much better. Looks like the current bolt is so tight that it bent some. I'll just have to pick me up a electric hand saw today. :)
