Subject: Anyone have Gibson SS headers?

Message:
I had Gibson SS headers put on my 5.9 last summer. Even when brand new, they never were really shiny, although I liked the way they look. Now, the Gibson's are covered in a very light layer of surface rust. Nothing real serious, just surface rust.

I recently saw a photo of JBA SS headers (Leslie's) and they were shiny, almost looked chromed plated. There was no mention of "ceramic coating" or other plating on the JBA's.

If you have Gibson SS headers, how do yours look? Now,I'm wondering if I got SS or regular steel headers.

I just got some Nickel/Chrome Plated Gibson headers for my 5.9L for low $300's. They look very shiny.

I thought the only selection was SS or Nickel.

I checked the Gibson web site and you are correct - Gibson does only offer the chromed or stainless headers.

Therefore, I must have the stainless.

Thanks

Bill

I just got my Gibson Stainless Headers installed..They are fairly dull, but that is normal for non-coated stainless exhaust pieces. Unless you polish and maintain stainless they will dull and discolor. They should not however, rust. That would concern me...Just my 2 cents...Mike

Mike - Thanks for the reply.

My headers have a very light "dust like" coat of rust after almost a year. I'm sure they must be stainless, just not a real high grade.

I have some high grade marine stainless hardware. This old hardware is rust free and is not magnetic. Metals with a lower grade of stainless are attracted to magnets. My headers are magnetic, which indicates they have a notable amount of regular steel in them.

Just to set my mind at ease though, would you test your headers to see if they are magnetic.

Thanks

Bill.
