Subject: V6 Oil Pressure Fix??
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 92 Dak with a V6 and lately if everyone is familiar with the oil pressure guage right after it has warmed up it has a tendancy to stay right on the minimum oil pressure and about half the time it drops half-way to the minimum reading and out of the "acceptable range." It also has very little movement while driving no matter the revs. I'm not very wise automotively and thought a new oil pump would be a fix. But after talking to the local shop I patronize I've been told that it won't do anything and what I really need to do is use thicker oil(10W40 winter, 20W50 Summer) or replace the rods and mains I believe. Is this accurate?

Note: Right now as far as I know the oil pump is stock, I have a Melling High-flow pump and the truck has 121K miles.

Hmmmm,
i think they are looking for some more business as it sounds to me. before you go replacing rods, how long has it been since your last oil change? Try replacing the oil and filter. A buddy of mine had the same problem, turned out he had a heavily clogged filter so no matter what pressure the pump would run at the oil just wasnt flowing. His fix sounded a little too good to be true to me, but try it anyway, go with a mobil 1 filter. Then go to the oil pump. I dont know alot about the oil system on our trucks(as far as quality of parts) but im just speaking from quasi-experience and word of mouth.
Good luck,
Josh

He didn't really say replace the rods and mains he just said that's all that could be done besides thicker oil. He said it would be a waste to replace the pump.
