Subject: Yet another performance question.. IP: Logged
Message: I have a 1999 3.9 with 27,000 miles. I am looking to upgrade performance, but I don't have a ton of money to spend all at once. My question is what should I start with, and what is the order that I should do the upgrades? As of now, I have done nothing to the engine. I was thinking that I should do the MSD 6-A Ignition as well as new plugs and wires to start, but I would like some comments on as what I should do. Thanks for all replies!
Peace,

Message: from what i understand the msd 6a won't give you a lot of horsepower, although it will improve your performance...you could go with a pcm or start out with a k&n filter, headers, cat-back system etc, etc...you have so many options

Message: Start out by doing a minor tune up, cap, rotor and spark plugs (Autolite 3923). Next a catback exhaust system (single outlet),a drop in K&N filter will help, but a K&N Gen II set up is alot better and then a high flow throttle body. As far as the MSD goes, wait until these mods. are in place. If you need plug wires get a set of Mopar Performance 7.5s', good product and not to expensive or if you want better, MSD 8.5s' will do the trick.

Message: The first two items I would do is intake and cat back exhaust. There is no performance PCM for your engine so your option there would be a Jet II chip. After that one of the new billet TB's from http://www.flometrics.com would be perfect. Then somewhere in the middle of all that you can do the MSD 6A, the Super Conductor 8.5 mm wires, the Blaster SS coil and the universal harness. When you do this mod you should go ahead and change your plugs to Autolite 3923 coppers plus a new cap and rotor with brass contacts. There, that should keep you busy for awhile.

Message: Thanks for all the replies guys. From what I gather, the tuneup would be my best bet to start off. Bernd, I went to your website! Damn, nice job. Sincew it seems like you have tested a lot of different things do you know which cat back would be best? I want a single outlet side exit, and I kind of like the looks of it exiting BEFORE the rear tire. Unsure if this is legal or not even. Am I correct in that the mods should come in this order?:
Minor tuneup as stated above
Gen2 Air Intake
Throttle Body
Cat back exhaust
Sorry for all the ?'s, just lookin to wake up my engine. Great site here!!

The mods listed work very well in that combination (and order).
As for the cat-back, a single exit system will make slightly more power. A single exit (either before or after the rear axle) is a good match for the V6. If you want a dual-exit (for that "Muscle truck" look), go with no more than a 2.25" on the exit pipes (from the muffler). The factory system is a 2.5" from the cat on back.
Intake and cat-back are legal (check with your local laws though). As for the throttle body, I don't know of anyone with a CARB approved TB.

Message: Bernd or anybody else for that matter, do you usually deal with online stores to buy your stuff, or do you deal locally? For right now I am looking at buying the tuneup stuff (cap, rotor and spark plugs (Autolite 3923)). Any suggestions on what brand for the cap and rotor, and where to buy online? Also, when replacing the plugs, should I go ahead and replace the wires too, and if so which one's? Thanks again guys/gals.
Peace,

Message: I normally buy my tune-up parts from a local store (PepBoys, Napa, or Autozone). Most of the other "Hot Rod" parts are through either online or group buys.

1) why wouldn't you ask BEFORE you bought the parts?
2) since you already purchased them, why don't YOU tell US if they are good parts to go with?
