Subject: Fast 2.5? IP: Logged
Message: I was wondering if anyone else out there has tried anything like this and what the results were. I'm thinking about building a 2.5 with a balanced rotating assembly, J&E forged pistons, mildly ported head and intake, Mopar Perf. cam for the Jeep 2.5 (depending whether any of them will work with the stock fuel inj. & comp.) and a 125 horse shot of laughing gas,(nitrous). This eng. came from a wrecked 2000 Dak and will be going in my 2001 Dak. with the 5spd and 3.55 posi. Any suggestions?

Message: As far as the porting and stuff, I haven't done anything like that, yet. I am trying to convince Bernd to build the Turbo kit for the 2.5L as for the happy gas, would a 125 shot be a bit of an overkill? I have my bottle coming in a couple of days, but I think I might only run a 40 hp shot. I have some other mods that I have done to the engine with good results though.
Drive it like you stole it... Flowmaster 40 series Delta, Bosch Platinum 4 plugs, 180 d thermostat, AIRAID intake w/K&N cone, Jet Chip stage 2 , Altezza tail lights, Billet Aluminum fuel door, 5% tint all around. Coming Soon: Turbocharger, New Throttle Body, MSD Ignition, and Nitrous.hehe

Message: Wow you have done a lot to that 2.5 engine. Was it really worth it? And how's the gas milleage? Did it go up or down? I did a few mods to my little 4 banger but still looking for ways to tweak it some more. What throttle body are you going to install? And where can I get one?
Powertone Sportstone muffler, Splitfire Platnium plugs , 180 d thermostat, AIRAID intake system, and Jet Stage 1.
Any suggetions would be appreciated.

Message: If I was going to look at a TB for a 2.5 I'd look at KRC (www.krcperformance.com). What I'm curious about is the AIRAID intake - I was under the impression that they didn't make an intake for the 2.5 - where'd you get it? Is it an intake made for something else you adapted?

Message: the 125 shot would be a little extreme (oops, i said a dirty word). the forged pistons could take it but you only have four cylinders...... try starting at a 35 shot and work your way up.

Message: Cotharyus, I got my intake from www.truckperformance.com. The is no adapting to it, simply remove your filter box, and the AIRAID bolts right in.
RIpper_242- As for the throttle body, I am going to KRC performance for that, and the 1.7 rockers. The mods are well worth it so far. The gas mileage fluctuates depending on how I drive, but normally I get about 350 miles before the gas light goes off. Yesterday I made a home brewed 3" intake for my Dak, and the performance was better than expected. Before the custom intake, I could get to 45mph in 2nd gear before redline, now I get to about 50 mph. Also, the Highway RPMs are a bit lower...80mph= approx 2700- 2800 RPM now. I am looking for a good 3" metal tube that I can use instead of the schedule 40 PVC I am using...

performance mods won't change what speed at what rpm.....only gear changes will do that. it's a mathematical thing.

Message: My 95 2.5 has a ported TB done by KRC (I live in FL so I was able to drive there a few times), Mopar Performance camshaft, custom K&N intake done by myself and KRC (I was the first 2.5 intake KRC had ever done!!) used some of the existing tubing but cut off the box and put on a big ol' K&N cone. I have a no cat, Flowmaster exhaust setup, advanced timing, Bosch +4 plugs, Bosch wires, Borg Warner brass cap and rotor, custom flash of the PCM by KRC, K&N crankcase vent filter, and the list goes on. I have experienced a lot of HP increase, never dyno'd but it's very noticeable

Thanks for the info guys and I'm glad to have found this site. I got a good idea what I'm going to spend that income tax return. I have checked out Speedtweaks and KCPerformance both are really good sites for Dakota Performance Enthusiasts. I'm interested with that throttle body and possibly the 1.7 roller rockers. I have done all the the mods to my truck myself and think I'm able do the throttle body, but as for the roller rockers, it sounds kind of complicated.

Message: Hold on Ripper. Don't buy that TB from Speedtweaks just yet (sorry Marty).
Have you ever heard of swapping a 2.5L TB for a 4.0L Jeep TB?
Jeep Wranglers come with exactly the same 2.5L engine as the Dakotas.

Message: Thanks for link Donnie. I'll be looking for a 4.0 throttle body at the nearby junkyards. If I can't find one KCPerformance or Speedtweaks would be my best bet.
2pnt5ltrluv, I've checked out the pics of your Dakota and I'm impressed. I like what you have done to your truck especially with that custom intake it looks like a pro did it. I don't have any pics of my truck yet but to give you an idea it's just a Intense Blue Pearl Regular cab w/Sport Package Dakota with black plastic Duraliner bed cover. I'm thinking of getting rid of Duraliner and replace it with one of the spray on bedliners.
Cotharyus-congrats on your purchase of your Airaid you will really like it. It was the first mod I did for my truck myself. The Airaid gave me power mostly towards the low and mid rpm range. Now that your truck will be able to suck in more air the next mod I would suggest to get is a stainless steal performance muffler to help your engine breath better for that high rpm power gains. IMHO anything else would downgrade your Dakota's stainless steel exhaust system. Its a matter of personal taste in which muffler you chose. The Powertone Sportone gave me what I wanted a less restrictive muffler with a deep throaty sound (http://www.powertone.com). The Airaid intake and the Powertone Sportone muffler gave me most performance gains to my truck. The Jet Performance Chip Stage 1(power towards high rpm range mainly WOT)gave me some but not much power. Changine to Spitfire plugs and Wires didn't give me that much power, it was expected cause the newer vehicles like the Dodge Dakota comes with a good ignition system anyway. I guess you can only do so much to tweak a 2.5L 4 banger besides adding turbocharger, supercharger, Nitrous etc.
IMHO Nitrous would give the best bang for buck performance mod to any engine. I would like to have one in my truck but I don't know if I can handle the instant boost NOS would give me while driving. Hehe I must be getting old. Good luck with your future mods.

Message: 2pnt5ltrluv - This will be my first actual performance minded mod - everything else so far has been pretty minor - I'm a computer (wiz, geek, nerd, whatever) by trade so I have some need things wired up inside. One of my favorites is an MP3 player wired into the stereo system - with 6 gigs of storage, I can run anywhere from 1200 to 1500 of my favorite songs on random - sort of like your own commercial free radio station that you never have to look for - perfect for those long trips. Anyhow, my dak is a 98 CC sport, 5 spd, its got a little over 60K miles on it, and I decided it was time to either replace it, or give it more power. I think my next step is to put a TB on, but I'm being careful - I like my torque, but I want to be able to get up and go too. I'm open to suggestions along those lines, but I don't expect to be able to get any of it done too quickly.

Message: Ripper_242- This is where I ran into problems making my kit. I did have to keep it, as I was not able to find a suitable 2.5" rubber connector at the time (I am still looking around though) I mickey moused this part of the construction... :) I did keep it, but I bought the 3" to 3" 90 degree fernco rubber tube from lowe's. Then I cut the lip off of one side (just the lip though and no further from the point where the tube starts to get smaller. I then shaved the knobs on ONE side of the throttle body connector (DON'T remove the hose clamp on the other side of the TB connector, this is to reconnect to the TB!!) and put high temp silicone sealer on the out side of that piece, then I crammed it into the fernco fitting. After I let the silicone dry a bit, I sealed up any holes that I saw and put a hose clamp around the fernco and the TB connector, tighten it, but not too much( only enough pressure to seal). Let it dry for a few hours. Then reattach the tube to the TB.
This worked for me, for now, I know it may not be the prettiest looking part of the intake, but it works really well. I am still looking to the best functioning fitting though... Hope this wasn't too confusing. If you give me your email addy, I'll send you a pic of that part of the intake.
