Subject: Gibson vs Flowmaster vs.....
IP: Logged

Message:
Oops.... posted this Q in the General Forum.... I'll try it here now:

Some say Gibson, others say Flowmaster, Dynomax, Borla.......

I want maximum flow with MINIMUM noise.

I'm leaning toword a Gibson 3" single side exit.

Opinions, please.

I've tried a few different catback systems on my Dakota and Gibson is my choice. I have the dual rear exit system, no annoying interior noise, nice
tone(not too loud) and better throttle response than other systems I tried. The only problem I had was installing the left tail pipe around the
spare tire, 31 inch tire, I had a muffler shop
modify the pipe to fit.

Oh no...quick...can anyone translate French? (Without using your tongue?) ;)

Gibson, Flowmaster, Borla, Dynomax...they all work exceptionally well. It mainly depends on the sound you want and the tailpipe configuration. However, Dynomax, Gibson, and Flowmaster all stated the same thing: "A single exit system will work much better." (In twenty words or less.)

Why? Because the exhaust pulses don't have to fight each other to get out of a dual-exit (muffler) configuration. Exhaust is mainly based on pulses rather than flow (although flow ratings do matter...to a point). Most mufflers are rated on Flow Ratings which were done on a flow bench with a steady (regulated) stream of air. Your exhaust isn't a steady stream...it's a bunch of pulses. (Not to get too picky...flowratings don't mean a whole lot if the rating was done on a steady, regulated, test.)

So...pick what you like for looks and sound...not on who's got the best flowrating.

Michel, the Flowmaster system has a very annoying interior noise level and a noticable loss of power in the lower rpm range, you may be disappointed.

Translation for Michel : Hello, I wanted a Gibson
split rear system but it was on back order.I then
decided to get a Flowmaster instead 2.5 outlets and 3.5 inlet. I will get back in a few days with a update. I will be installing it on tuesday.

i got a flowmaster dual exit on my dak and i'm satisfied with them, although i've never tried any of the others so i can't say anthing for or against them, but you can get flowmasters with different interior and exterior sounds.

Hey CanDak.... I wholeheartedly agree with you on both points. I put a Flowmaster on my S-10, and the low-end noticably decreased. The interior (and exterior) noise level was WAY too irritating for my tastes. I don't think I'd consider another one.

I went with the Gibson "Swept Side" CatBack. Best $340 installed mod that I have done to my 2001 4.7 Quad Cab. Sweet sound both in and out of the cab without lossing any fillings!! It does produce power. John

I have a dual exit 40 series (older, not delta flow) Flowmaster, never noticed a loss in anything, but then again, never noticed a GAIN either =] Keep in mind, I put it on for the noise, not the power, which is why I prob didn't notice a gain. Also, I had been driving a PreMag v6 Dak for 8 years, so just driving a bone stock v8 Dak was taking some getting used to! hehehe

I do love the sound! Guess being a redneck/country boy, loud pipes don't bother me and are like music to my ears. I like the sound of Flowmaster so much, that I just had 2 delta flow (quieter) 40 series put on the new Stang. OMG how sweet they are. Of course, the wife thinks they are loud, dunno why, her Ram had no cats and glasspacks only.. can't get much louder than that.....

I just put a Gibson 2.5 in/out on my 2002 R/T and I will say this, its quiet....very quiet, I was disappointed. As far as performance, a muffler isnt gonna make enough difference to tell.

i have a flowmaster cat back with the 50 series delta flow. everyone tells me its loud, but i never get to hear it outside, and the cab is too well insulated. i'd like to put a high flow cat on and a 40 series with a turndown. that should be loud enought.

I have the Gibson 3" in single. I love the sound. Its deep and burbley , and not too loud. I recommend just getting the muffler and maybe a chrome tip. Way cheaper than the whole cat-back system ($375) since you already have 3" piping. Wish I could post a .wav file of my exhaust.

Just replaced the stock muffler on my 4.7 with a Flowmaster 40 series delta-Flow , and LOVE it!! The sound is very "grumbly" outside , and just a little louder inside. Just enough to let you know its there! Push the peddle to the floor , and it sounds AWSOME!!! Now , I don't know it its the homemade intake along with the muffler , but it does seem like I have a little better throttle responce , and the mpg seems a little better also. If I could keep my right foot from pushing down so hard just to hear it , the mpg may even be better , lol

I am interested in buying a SPLIT REAR exhasut for my truck. I want a nice sound preferably LOUDER on the outside. Looking at Gibson, Flowmaster, and Magnaflow right now. Which one should i get for the BEST SOUND. I am only interested in the sound. It does not necessarily have to be any of the 3 choices, but those are one's i have looked at.

J.C. Whitney sells the Gibson for about 285.00. Plus, you get 10% off. I bought mine there. It is direct bolt up, no fabrication. Sounds good, but think I had more low-end torque with stock.
