Message: Its a natural by-product of hydrocarbons (gasoline) around heat. When you fuel injectors fire, there is a fine mist of gasoline throughout the intake. The intake is hot, and the mist turns into tiny particles of carbon. Its a chemical change caused by the heat. I fight this everyday in the refinery trying to make pumps work. Nothing you can do about it but clean it off at intervals.
