Subject: "Dual Exhaust" What about the spare tire??
IP: Logged

Message:
Went through Gibson's web page looking for the Split-rear setup for my Dakota. I read the fine print it quoted that the spare tire must be removed or relocated!! Note: This is only for 2000 Dakota's with 4X4, I don't want to remove my spare. Then why bother buying Gibson's system then. I really don't want a custom system, I rather to it myself.

Do all exhaust companies have the same problem?

Have any of you guys managed around this problem?

Thanks in advance
Anthony

Hey, I asked the same question at the local
off-road shop, and they said it can still be
done!!! i have on on my truck right now....Just
when you go to put it on, lower the spare tire and
put the system on, but when you go to put the tire
back up just pull it towards the bumper a little
as you raise it up and it will be out of the
way...its a very close call about an inch or so
but it will work!!!! just make sure they get the
pipes in well enough and clamped down good....the
shop put it on for me, and i had problems with the
pipes staying in tight b/c they misclamped
it....took it back and the welded them back
on...its supposed to void the warrenty on the
system, but the dealer said that they would honor
the warrenty.....

I hate to tell you but everyine in the Memphis area tells me the same thing. To add duals the spare tire has to be taken from under the back bumper. Now J.C.Whitney seels a spare tire rack for in the bed that straps to the bedrail and keeps the tire from sliding around. A great idea if you have a camper shell. I done it and my 99 V6 sounds good. IF a bumblebee with a hard-on sounds good to you.

Sorry, but I honestly don't want my Dakota to sound like that.

Where's the deep rumble of the V8 in that setup? ex: A trans am with a borla, now that's awesome.
Unless you want it to sound like a honda civic

My buddy has a 97 Camaro SS with the borla system on it, man that sounds soooo sweeeet. It hits the spot.

Well the dual exhaust system looks very mean, but I decided to go with a mopar cat-back system. It's a dynomax cat-back exhaust, I really like the sound of pure power. My buddy has it on his Dakota, it sounds great.

I will not take off my spare for this Gibsons dual exhaust system it's not worth it, no point. Spare tire mounted in the box, totally a waste.
But, the look of the duals are shape, oh well what can you do.

I had a custom pipe shop put a cat back system on my 98 dakota using a Rhino muffler that went around the tire and class III hitch with no problems. It sounded great and still only cost 200 bucks.

Here's the scoop..my father owns a exhaust shop
and i had 00 CC 4.7 4x4 with a full size 31x10.50
spare..i ran 2 1/2 inch tail pipes out of
2 highflow performance mufflers called
IronTuf. 2 1/2 inch pipe will fit between the
spare and the shocks. theres plenty of room about
1 inch clearance on each side of pipe between
shock and spare...don't let anybody tell you
different!!!!It will go. It will have to be
custom bent exhaust for your truck..

Alot of the aftermarket mandrel bent "performance exhaust" systems make you move the spare tire. That's one draw back to buying a pre-bent performance system. Shop your local exhaust shops. Ask alot of questions,(some shops will screw you). I personally am doing custom hand bent "cat-back" duals on domestic fullsize trucks for $225.00 plus tax. (glass pack, tail pipes, chrome tips, hangers, clamps) My best advice is talk to other guys in your area that has had dual systems installed, and ask them who they recommend. Go check out the shops, and ask questions. If they don't want to talk to you, and give you answers, LEAVE !!!! They just want your money.

or just do what I did.....I dumped it with a flowmaster, sounds kick aasss!!

put a single inlet dual outlet with turn downs...personally i like the sound and there is no visual exaust pipe exiting the truck, which I like the best....i dont like seeing exhaust....it takes away from the looks of the truck i think.....
