Seeing as I own a 2001 ZN Cougar 5spd.
I been up to 140mph, my car is stock I believe only the beer can models are governed lower. I know mine is Governed by the tach, so some have been 145mph depending on winf, hill and what not stock.
Are you talking High speed run or 0-60? I actually think you might jump on a Cougar for the fact you have more torque down low but around 40-50 the Cougar will pass you...not sure but that is what I think from a Race with a V10 Dodge Ram...fast down low but died out around 60mph to push it through the wind...lol
It is easy to bump up the Horespower on the Cougar by gutting the pre-cats...people have done dynos with 20HP gain. Plus add a Cat-back exhaust, SVT UIM, Superchip ECU, and a few other minor mods and you will have 200HP Cat. Oh, only a few have done the 3.0L conversion on NECO. I am holding off for the turbo setup...2 differant kits pishing the cougar to 250-300HP...hehehe
Then again it all depends ont he driver...hell I lost to a Ford Explorer and teens because the car did not want to go into 2nd gear...then after that they were affaid to push it becaus eof the police station so I flew by at 100mph waving to the cop out front...got to love when your parents donate money to the local cops...lol

You will not get 20 HP gains from gutting the precats. If you have new injectors, TB, UIM & LIM and then gut the precats, you'll get your 20 HP (more like 25). This will still put you under 200 FWHP N/A with the 2.5L V6. There hasn't been a single dyno to prove that the 2.5L in it's naturally aspirated form can produce 200 FWHP on the Contour or Cougar sites, as I belong to both and have owned both autos. Give it up already you damn Ford/Mercury freaks. I love those cars (Contours/Cougars) to death, but short of nitros oxide or S/C or Turbo kits, the numbers you list can not be made. Try telling that to Terry Haines and he'll laugh in your damn face. Hell, he designed and built these cars.

I used to own a 98svt contour that thing shared the same platform as the cougar and my truck when it was dropped would rape my svt all motor. when I opened the bottle on thhe svt the truck would be shot.
the cougars and countours being manual don't really have an edge till at about 50mph. you have to go through 3 ears just to get 60mph out of an mtx unless you have a diablo or superchip for the raised speed limiter.
also the mtx's top out at 143mph, they simply gear out theres nothing left in the transaxle with the stock rev limiter.
I know the csvt platform very well, and have conversed with terry haines(the original designer of the contour) before, there is some mods you can do to get an svt to run consistant 14.2 with simple engine boltons and a quafie. but you can have a dak running the same or better for alot less.
keep in mind an svt is already 30hp up on a cougar 200vs 170

Wow...an older thread :) I still enjoy the CSVT's and any V6 MTX-75 version of the same platform. Great handling cars! They can be made fast, but just like my '03 Maxima, they are still FWD cars. It takes an act of God for us to break into the 11's (and still be street legal), and no Contour or Cougar can get there at present state. Now with a 3.0L LS swap...maybe...

My heavy ass quad cab has kicked the $hit out of cougars, v-6 mustangs and firebirds. I am only talking 0-100 because the damn thing shuts off. In stock trim they just dont stand a chance with a v-8, sorry.

I love my Dakota, but there is no way it can hang with my SHO. I have a 95 auto. I think maybe you can get a small jump on it off the line, but the SHO just keeps pulling harder and harder up to the 7k redline. I've left guys in Mustangs (GTs, not just v6s), camaros, firebirds all with their jaw open. Not to mention the countless number of ricers that, at first, don't understand what a Ford Taurus is doing with a spoiler on it. Don't dismiss the SHO so easily, this is one of the best sleepers ever.

My "MOM' had a SHO and it didn't impress me at all it had nothing untill it started to scream in the high rpm's. It was the 5-speed and was rated at 230 hp, I believe that they are a MID 15 sec car. It's still a cheap ass car though ,hers fell to pieces pretty quick!

well this is my first time here and probally my last and if anyone has something to say about my post the e-mail me.
well i have 98 svt contour and with some mod it'll run 9.5 in the 1/8 at 75mph and im just shifting into third as i cross the line so that it take 3 gears to get to 60mph line is bull now i know someone is a math wizard so what do those numbers equal in a 1/4 and i think my car will smoke your v8 truck but you can pick on all the the lil v6's you can find but what v-8 power plants have you guys beaten, not many huh!!!!!!!!!!!

I believe the spoiler is just part of the appearance package of the SHO. Your pretty defensive aren't you, Travis? Remeber, I have a Dak too. All I said was, my truck wouldn't stand a chance against my SHO. Maybe your truck is modified, or maybe your just an arrogant teenager who wants to run his mouth off every chance he gets. If your not, then maybe you should seek therapy.

Dudes, do the math, a stock SHO against a stock 4.7 l 5 spd CC OR Reg Cab will lose in the 1/4, but in hi speed runs, it takes mods and more mods to get the Dak running 140, so there you have it. Stop arguing about some bulls_hit 14 and 15 sec. cars and trucks and make em' run 11's. Then you have somethin to brag about.
I have a BMW 535i that your SHO would shi_t a brick trying to keep up with ON TOP END, but it's just not as powerful as the 300 lb ft and 255 or so hp my Dak puts down. That means it's 1/4 mile is just not as quick as the Dak. Neither is your SHO given it's stock.
This is bulls_hit arguing about family cars and medium duty pickups built to pull.
Get a Porsche 911 Carerra from 94 with a full Gemballa setup for about $28,000 and you've got yourself a 550 hp super-car. Then put it on the trailer and pull it with the Dak to the track you should trade the SHO in on since it rattles so bad when the bass drops.
A Taurus is a Taurus and a Dak is a Dak. I prefer the Dak but neither are supercars without MAJOR modding that inhibits everyday driveability.

Sorry, I don't have a bass-boat anymore....
But unless your SHO will run 155 you'd lose pretty bad. Mine is a 5 spd. with a Conforti chip.
It makes about the same numbers as the SHO with the chip, about 230 hp, 240 tq, and she pulls hard too. Weighs about 3600, but Mustangs can't keep up once were up to 80 or 90. Niether would the SHO.
(Notice he didn't say anything about running against a DAK in the 1/4. )
