Message:
I have a 02 R/T and i want to be louder than what it is now. I already have the 16in Dynomax bullet muffler on there but i also not one not two but three cats on this truck. Now i was wondering has anybody removed the 3rd cat and if so do think it will void my warrety as for as the engine is concered?

Shouldn't void warranty as far as the engine is concerned but good luck getting any emissions warranty. Much better sound/performance without the 3rd cat.

It got quite a bit deeper and louder. It was pretty quiet with the system before. (not much louder than stock) Performance is the best part I would say a increase in revability by 500rpm and more power everywhere. Not a ton but you could feel it. Doesn't drop off near as bad after 5000 as compared to before.

Some people may think I am full of it but I think I gained a little. Definitely no loss.

I don't know where people get off saying that removing the cat causes loss in torque! Then why would getting headers improve torque? It flowing more air! Unless your running 5-6 inch pipes and some how you have a cat that fits, then maybe you would loos torque by removing it. I have first hand knowlage that with my 350CID removing the cat gave it much more torque and hp. The day I sold it, I did some test drives then installed the new cat, I was 100% sure that it hurt the torque and hp output. Only thing it did help was keeping the engine cooler for some reason. I have yet to remove my 3rd car on my R/T but I'm waiting until I get new headers that are on order.

I've also removed my 3rd cat on my R/T...I can feel the gains. The sound is kickass, espeically when you take off from a stop light or just sitting still it sounds better. I think though w/ the headers, M-1 intake and cuttin the 3rd cat off it kindof bogs a little through 2nd gear then picks right back up. Like CW said, noticeable gains from 500rpm.

Mike D,

That bog is most likely due to the M1 2bbl dumping so much air into the heads that it doesn't know what to do with it until it's hit a higher rpm range like 3k to release some of that build up of air. I'm hope that the 1.7 RR that I ordered will open the valve more to let in and out more air that's supplied from the M1. At that point a free flow exhaust system will rock! Headers and no cat and a good muffler will do wonders! A engine is just a big air pump right :)

Well I kinda figured the headers and no cat would help push the air the new TB and M-1 is pumping into it but it still bogs through 2nd till it hits 3000, it kicks ass after that point.

Long time ago, I installed a header (Pacesetter) and removed a cat from Celica, and had a similar experience. It seemed like the whole power band characteristic changed. Less power/torque below 3000 rpm, and sustantially increased power feeling at upper end. However, I ended up removing the header because I didn't really drive WOT in my everyday driving. I think just a catback system might be just good enough for everyday driving "legally".

Well the new JBA headers are way less heavy than the stock headers...those things weighed a ton. Plus it only bogs from 1500-2800 in 2nd. 1st,3rd & 4th it flows great. Hopefully a PCM reflash and new 1.7 RR's will clear up my problem. Anthony let me know if the RR's help w/ the bog.

For you guys that say you are "bogged" down in 2nd gear until 3k rpms.... do you have Performance Port/Polished Heads ? .... just a thought... I dunno what you guys think, but I beleive 2nd is my most powerful gear.... gave me a 60ft time of 2.1 and this truck is stock other than the PCM. Anyone else's thoughts ?

Well 2nd used to be a powerful gear B 4 I put all the air into it. If I had a performance PCM I'm sure it would take care of the 2nd gear for me. And nothing done to the heads...new heads are too Xpensive right now.

Yea, I'll let you know how it goes when I get them, they have already been shipped. It was scanned in COLUMBUS, OH US last night. So I should be getting them any day now.

My bogg range is 2800-3100 in any gear, I'll post a video of it :) tonight maybe. It will be a view just like this one :)

I have a feeling that the 1.7RR,headers and gut cat will help a lot in my case.
