I got beat a few times by my freind in his 97' Ram 4x4 with 360 and auto. I asked him why he got off the line with no tire spin like I was having trouble with and he said his secret was putting the t-case in 4hi!!! I couldnt believe it, I thought it must be bad for his tranny/t-case. So, is it ok to race like that???

I would also like to know this, i dont think it would be a big deal (if you dont do it often) unless you drop the clutch.
Thoughts anyone?

Dont forget, it is on the street, you know, a dry, hard surface.

There really isn't much difference in wear unless you're racing in turns.

There isn't any difference until you get up into higher speeds (above 75 or so)...but if you let off the gas, shift it back into 2( at maybe 40), then keep accelerating you shold be fine. It's a technique that takes some parctice but you can do it and hardly slow down at all in the process.

Personally I would cringe at the thought of dumping the clutch on a hard road in 4WD but, hey you wanna play, you might have to pay, IMO. If you're racing you're gonna dump the clutch. Same thing with auto, you're going to find out what is the weak link in the driveline is sooner or later-later if you're lucky.

I had a '70 Blazer that I put a 350 LT1 in and I threw the rear driveshaft three times before I got a custom one made up with bigger yokes made up. I threw the shafts off the road in the dirt, never raced it on the hard road although I could break loose the 38's popping second gear, LOL.

I'm just saying you might have to beef up your drivetrain so it can shrug off the abuse that it will be put through.

He is not dumping the clutch: the post states that he has an automatic.

Nothing wrong w/ that he'z just racing in 4 wheel drive and punching it so it gets all 4 wheels grabbing instead of 2. I mean its just about as bad on your tranny when your pulling 2 wheels.
