That's an unfair question. They've both had good ones and bad ones. Beyond that it depends on how the owner uses it, what he uses it for, and how he takes care of it.

I figure we should compare like this:
5.7 - 5.9 (Chevy wins in my opinion)
5.0 - 4.7 & 5.2 (Dodge wins in my opinion)
4.3 - 3.9 (Chevy wins in my opinion)

It's only fair to compare 8 to 8 and 6 to 6. Plus, the 4.7 and the 5.2 are to close in comparison themselves.

I think the Dodge all the way. Better rod to stroke ratio eg. 1.8 to one. The bigger the ratio the more torque. The lifter bores are the bigest in the industry giving faster ramp speed on the cam. Some blue ovals and bowties are ok but for me its "MOPAR OR NO CAR" for me.

Personaly fellas, I don't think it worth the effort to argue over which manufacturer is better. It don't matter whether you have a Ford, Dodge, Chevy, or whatever if you're into building up an engine. Although some manufacturers made their blocks out of certain desirable metals, that I can see debating about. I think it mostly depends on what you do to the motor to make it crank out some balls and how you take care of it. That's just me though.

97 Dakota Sport 2.5L/4cly. (don't forget, w/ a whopping 120hp, wow. It's a sad motor, I'm looking for a small V-8 to install)

Bob, the hemi heads, that you mentioned, for the flathead Ford were made by, non other than, Zora Arkus Duntov, later known for his work with the Corvette. They were known as Ardun heads. Ford had nothing to do with their manufacture.
If you want "Bang for the Buck", you can make more horsepower, per dollar spent, with a small block Chevrolet than with any other engine.

Hmmm Let me look into the crystal ball HMMMMM if my memory is still correct I distinctly remember that DODGE made motors for FORD back in the Day but DODGE BROTHERS decided to build their own cars after HENRY FORD Patented all the DODGE BROTHERS engine designs and that when WALTER P CHRYSLER gave the DODGE BROS. a hand in developing their first automobile. Now back to the original post CHEVY OR DODGE i would have to say that the DODGE engine has more possiblities then the CHEVY engines. Lets Compare the 340 to the 350. The 350 has 5.7 rods compared to DODGES 6.123,Yeah I know that CHEVY has the 6.0 Rod but how much are those gonna cost ya! Now the Heads the DODGE has Angle Head Plugs Stock the CHEVY no such thing have to pay big bucks! Yes Chevy does have some advantages like there are alot of them POS laying around in every junkyard and tied to every boat in the marina . My personal preference is DODGE and there is no Other. But then again this is my 2cents Worth. have a Happy New Year Gentlemen and Ladies.

Well the Modern engines go to Chevrolet hands down. The latest generation of engines are great compared to the old LA design that Dodge is still useing. The only real problems that the chevrolets have is related to carbon issues relateing to how the emisssion system handles spent gas's. The best engines in Dodes line up are so new(4.7,3.7) that no one really knows how they are going to hold up. The power is also way down on Dodge motors from the factory when compareing V8's. I am still waiting to see a Hemi 5.7 teaked like the Corvette Z06 which is close to 5.7. Dodge does not have an entire family of engine based on a common design. The Chevy 4.8,5.3. 6.0 V8 are all built on the same modular design. The best engine in any Dodge is the Cummins Turbo Diesel!!!! THe sore spots in the LA engines have always been oiling system, gasket sealing issues and poor flowing head. The main concern with new Hemi 5.7 was to design a cheap engine that had clean emissions and still made decent power. The had to clean up the heads and intake to prevent fuel from pooling and seperateing from the air charge. The second concern was all the gasket failures that all of the older dodge engines were prone to!! The third issue was power. They needed despretly to have an engine that would compete with Chevys new generation of engines. They also fixed that goldberg oiling system!!! Now they need to either buy alisons transmisson from Chevy or get to work designing a better trany for their diesels and possably their bigger hemi's that are comeing down the pipe. I am woundering how Dodge's 5.7 is going to stack up against Toyota's 5.4. Toyotas 5.4 is going to based on their 4.7 Truck engine. This means that you will be seeing a double OHC variable valve timeing 5.4 that is being designed to compete with Chevy in terms of output power and torque. In terms of refinment niether the Chevy 4.8 or the DOdge 4.7 can compare to the Toyota 4.7. Interms of Cheap HP Chevy wins hands down. You can build up 3 Chevy Small blocks for the same price as one DC 340 or 360

I have read all of the posts concerning chevy and DODGE and this is my two cents, DODGE at least spends the time to put out a quality product and uses better casting materials for their engines while chevy pumps out cheap engines and crappy cars by the thousands- they could care less about quality, yea, I could build a strong 350 blow it up and build another to blow up or spend a little bit extra and build a good strong 360 or 340, as for the oiling problem - I have seen more oil puddles under chevy products than dodges. as for the power issue a stock magnum 360 puts out 250hp and 345lb torque @ about 3200 RPM, yea, the hp is low but it's the TORQUE that counts, I don't care if a chevy puts out 1000hp without torque it's worthless. That POS 5.3 liter they have is a joke 270hp, where's the torque? CHEVY - like a rock(on the side of the road). BTW I sure do see a lot a rams and dakotas on the road for them to be so "unpopular", and if there is a large trailer being towed its either a dodge or a ford pulling it, why? because chevy has cheap transmissions, which is they have finally started using allisons. overall i would rather push a dodge than drive a chevy.

99RT, You did not say one thing that answered the origanal post. You went on an emotional rant. It is pretty easy to see how much bang for the buck you get with an old Chevy small block. It is the cheapest engine to build up(fact). Chevy has an entire family of engines based on a common design giveing the customer alot of choice (fact). Chevy has the best HD automatic in a light truck alison(fact). THe 4l80E is leaps and bounds better them most automatics (fact). Dodge 4.7 and 3.7 rather new and unproven(fact). 5.2 and 5.9 have an overly complicated oil system (fact). The LA engines have a 40 year history of gasket problems especialy head gaskets, bellpan and intake gaskets (fact). Do not confuse the 340 TA with a standard 340. It is pretty obvious that Dodge has been draging it ass with the release of the hemi and any new products. As ugly as alot of GM's products have become they are realeasing 12 new products a host of new engines ecotec 4 cylinder for caviler, I4 based on based on 4200 I6 for midsize truck, I5 also based on 4200I6, V16 for cadilac, the new v6 in the CTS....... The list keeps going on. I do not own a chevy and I never have. I own a Dodge and a Toyota but unlike some I try to stick with facts not flights of fancy based on emotional sentiment. P.S. The best engine Dodge has in it's trucks is the Cummins Turbo diesel (fact).

The origanal post did not ask if you were a mopar man or not. I love the old super bee's,Cuda's, Swingers....... I am also one of those strange nuts that miss the slant six! None of this answeres the origanal post. DC really needs to pull the rag out of their but and start giveing us product. They need a couple of rear wheel drive cars with a decent engine and they need them now!! They need to offer more engines based on either the 4.7 or the 5.7 and they need them now!!! They need to work with MOPAR PERFORMANCE and SEMA to make sure that HP parts are ready for these engines when they are released. THey need to drop some code acidentaly and anonamisly(sp) at leach,KB, and other tuners door steps. When on sunday sell on momday!!!!! THey need to create some excitement for the new powertrains at NHRA type bracket raceing events!!!!! WHile I love my German heritage the germans do not understand the American automotive market very well. They understand the luxury car market but they are clueless about the working man and his truck and the back yard raceing scene!!!!
