Filter ID size for 3" PVC pipe
IP: Logged

Message:
I noticed two different filter ID size posted above for 3" PVC pipe. Few said 4" ID and one said 3.5" ID for the filter. Which one is really correct for 3" PVC pipe? I am in a process of shopping parts for my 4.7L.
Also, should I spray/soak the cone filter with oil that 2-stroke dirt bike guys are using on their foam filter to trap the dirt better?

TeamFast,

I tried to click the link of the pic that you posted. But Yahoo pics, came up with an error message. I wanted to see your intake one more time, I'm thinking of getting rid of the factory air box, and replacing it with a 3" mandrel bent 90 directly connected from my TB to my Airaid intake.

Thanx

OK fellas, I'm gonna throw my 2 cents in and maybe someone can use the info. My Dad has been in the pumbing business for 20 years which I had the pleasure of doing it for 4 years before I joined the military. As some of you might have guessed, I got to work with plastic quit a bit. Although I never really got to work with ABS plastic. There is however a reason for this. Where I'm from, they have restricted ABS plastic from being put in ground. The reason they did this was because when someone ran hotwater in the house and it flowed through the drain it would make the plastic soft and if there was any weight on the pipe(i.e. ground) the pipe would start to form an oval shape instead of staying round. The solution? Only schedule 40 plastic or higher was allowed to be used under ground. I know this is long for a little info, but that way you know that there is a reason behind me saying that pvc (at least schedule 40) should in all respects be stronger. I have a ram air hood so I havent had to deal with this problem. I hope this info helps some folks out. Heck if your really want to be safe, go with schedule 80 PVC. I promise that wont melt :-).

Good Deal"D",
Sounds like you like it? I do think it makes a huge difference with an intake like that.
OK, Now a question for anyone.
If I wanted to make a ram air system. Could I get an airbox and use my 9in K&N cone filter inside it? Then run another 3in tube to the grill? Just a thought. Comments? Thanx

sounds like a good idea....I was thinking of
changing where the air enters the aribox...right
now it enters right above the passenger side

the airbox to the grill, let me know.

RE: ABS vs. PVC

OK you guys have been saying to use PVC, where everywhere else says to use ABS piping. What they say about the PVC is that under engine heat it puts off fumes that can cause the internal engine parts to stick where ABS won't. ABS might have a lower melting point, but does not give off the fumes. Is this right OneFast4x4? Also if you look at 360intakez.com site they have this part about the sewer pipe homebrews. Click here to see what happens when plastic melts.

it wont give off fumes unless it starts to melt
right????? schedule 40 wont melt....hell,
switch to aluminum pipe, and see how hot
that sonofab1tch will get. metal conducts
heat...plastic doesnt. The inside of the stock
airhat is plastic, so what gives?

I have been running my homebrew in 95
degree heat for a couple of days....no
problem.

The plastics used in the OEM parts are not related to PVC (polyvinylchloride). When ABS pipe (butalstyrene)(sic)first came out in the plumbing industry it was made in part from melted telephones. In the southern states only PVC can be used in plumbing. Plastic electrical pipe is made softer than PVC. Thats why electricians use heaters to bend it as needed. I have also used the heaters to bend PVC but with much more heat. I don't think PVC will ever "melt" under the hood in normal conditions.
With PVC plumbing pipe the "inch diameter" is always the inside diameter i.e 3" pipe is 3" inside and about 3.5" outside, (sch 40).
Probably the hottest time under your hood is after a hard drive and when the engine is then turned off, no air circulation. If you think the PVC might get to hot or soft try checking it after about 15 minutes of stopping the motor. I personally don't see a problem with PVC unless there is a fire, God forbid.

Here are some pictures of my modified intake on my 2001 4.7l.
I am using the stock airbox with a K&N Drop-in filter.
I have used a fernco elbow, short PVC pipe, and a fenco
coupler to connect to the airbox. I then extended the air
intake to the grill using 4" aluminum ducting.
A modified black plastic sewer pipe connector
is inside of the airbox to connect the aluminum
ducting, and a sewer pipe 4"round to 3"x4" rectangular
was used to get the air from the grille.
I had to cut some slits in the 3x4 pipe to fit around
the a/c lines.

Well, looking at all the messages has confused me even more. Questions: is an airaid intake for the 4.7 enough, or do I need to add "homebrew" parts to it? The cheapest I have found the airaid to be is $146.00, is this a good price, and if not where can I get one cheaper? What kind of performance can I expect?

I made mine out of 3" ABS plastic. I got my k&n from pep boys for about $35. I used 2 45 bends and about 15" of strait pipe. I got a smaller filter than the standard intakes. So I could fit it through the front of the truck right behind the grill. You can't get any better air then from the grill. You also get a ram air affect at high speeds. Since my filter didn't have the normal pipe conection on the end I used an ABS peice that is made to hold your toilet to the ground. Then just screwed it to the filter. I t works great and looks clean. Plus I don't have to order my filters from anywhere. I can just get one from pep boys. I wasn't sure if it was going to be something i could do but it was much easier than i thought.

I have always wondered if the K&N for Gen IIs are the same set up as us older GenI guys? They dont say the GenIIs FIPK will fit but the olny measurement that would have to match would be the diameter of the throttle body right? Whats is the deal with all aftermarket co.'s leaving us behind? Sucks alot.
