Subject: Indexing??? IP: Logged
Message: I've send several references to "indexed" spark plugs.
What does "indexed" mean?
Is it a fancy name for having set the gap?
Pardon me if I'm ignernt or unhip.

Indexing your plugs is using washer spacers between the base of the plug and the head to get each plug electrode to face up twords the intake valve when the plug is completly tightened. Doing this gives you better performace( quicker combustion ).

Now I have a few more questions.
I am using the Autolite 3923s. Which is the proper way to install the washers supplied with the plugs? The washers have a smaller diameter side and a larger diameter side. There are no instructions supplied with the spark plugs. There must be a proper way to install the washers or both sides would be the same diameter.
Why do the Autolite plugs have the "screw on" top? (Were they originally designed for a lawn mower?)
Where do you get the washers to use for indexing?
Thanks
Bill

Message: Indexing your plugs will not gain much power and works best on engines that run over 8'000 rpm .Years ago I read a test on a 190 hp, 4cyl drag bike engine turning 12,000rpm ,it showed a 2hp gain when the gap was pointing away! from the intake and 1hp when the gap faced the intake. The screw on top is bacause this plug is used on many small engines(lawn mowers, sleds, bikes, boats...)rather than make two plugs they use the nut.I think Summit has washer sets.
