Hello to all...

Would love your opinions about the Intense Performance air intake and the 1517 K&N that will fit my 2000 Dakota 3.9L. The folks from Intense recommended the Stage II with the 7" big mouth, so this one runs $100 less that the K&N system.

I like the looks of the K&N and the fact that it does not use the factory air hat, but other than that, what are the advantages and disadvantages of going with the cheaper Intense system? If it means spending a $100 more for a better system, I'll do it, but if it really isn't going to pay off in better performance, I'd rather save the money.

What do you all think?

Also look into the 360airintakez.com. I think thats the address. They have a system almost identical to the intenseperformance system. 360 has a heat shield though and a 9 inch K&N cone filter. I'm going to get on as soon as they put a heat sheild on th 4.7 system.

If it's 'for the money', then go homebrew intake. Got one on my 4.7, it's great!

Anyone have experience with the AIRAID products? They make one for the 4.7L that is a good price (about $160 USD) and an easy install. The nice thing about this system seems to be the fact that you can keep the lower half of your air box, which will protect the filter when off roading. The huge open K&N cones seem to be too easy to get wet.

I am in the same place as you david but i have the
5.9 engine. I like the k&n and the intense
performance. K&N has the name brand and popularity
and replaces the hat. Intense is cheaper and says
it is better. Can someone please give me a
straight answer. maybe there own opinions or
experiences. I wil not make my own but need help
deciding.

360airintakez!
Cheaper than Intense/Ztube,,nearly identical product,,,,but it's in two pieces, so it can be manuevered around the cramped engine bay. Comes w/filter, and same quality.
I've had mine for over 3 months, and extremely pleased w/MPG/performance/and incredible sound.

According to the folks at Intense, it was recommended that I purchase the Stage II with the 7" big mouth at $135 (according to them, the 3.9 doesn't displace enough to justify theuse of the 9"), so that makes significantly cheaper than even the 360airintakez.

Still undecided and looking for opinions. Any comments would be appreciated.

Hey David do you see how you never get a straight
answer? So does anyone have an actual thought
about which way to go between K&N and Intense
performance? Please give me an idea of what you
have heard and what you feel is better. Thankyou
for the informa

The only real difference between the K&N and the intense performance is the material used. One is plastic and the other is mandrel bent aluminum. Both probably offer the same performance but the K&N setups are prone to cracking from what I understand. It comes down to what you prefer and what you want to spend.

I guess my concern about the Intense one is that the setup uses the factory air hat. Is that concern enough, in people's opinions here, to put out the extra money for the K&N system?

Maybe that's the best way I can put it.

David - I noticed that you indicated you need the 1517 K&N. that is the one I had to use on my 2001 model 5.9.

The later "non 4.7" applications require relocation of the cruise control cable. This K&N model comes with the necessary replacement brackets to do this. The K&N also comes with a quality heat sheild.

My first 1517 air tube sucked (literally) as it had cracks in it. K&N has changed the design and construction of the air tube. The replacement they sent me was well contructed. (It did require some minor "custom" install changes.)

I am pleased with the K&N and would recommend it. However, I've never used any of the others. You will love the sound and performance.

I too had the same dilemma, go with the Intense Performance Stage II, I consulted Bernd directly with this issue and he said the performance difference in the IP and K&N were minimal if existant and all. Intense Performance Stage II with the 7" Big Mouth, and buy it from Speedtweeks.net, it's a little cheaper.
I love mine, gives the truck a nice kick in the pants and sounds incredible in the 3000-5000 RPM range.

Thanks for the recent posts. This info makes me feel more at ease with going with the less expensive Intense Performance package.

Now to gently explain to the wife why it is that we absolutely have to spend the money on this :-)

David -

The main reason you would get a performance intake is the substantial increase in mileage which will result. The replacement intake will pay for iteself in a very short period of time. Also the replacement intakes come with a lifetime air cleaner element that you will not have to spend money on to replace.

The prior post is suitable for a "cut and paste" presentation to spouses whom need convincing of the necessity of a performance intake.

I have similar propaganda available for Ignition systems, headers, TBs etc....

All have been tested and proven to work!

Being the sensible woman she is, how could she not accept the logic in your posts? :-)

Hey, if she can have a kitchen towel that I must specifically use for the counters and one to use specifically on the dishes, I can have this intake for my truck...err, I mean "our" truck :-)
