Subject: Flometrics 4.7L TB - Initial Results

The TB test wasnt as definitive as it could have been... Normally you would
drive the truck with the new mod and then dyno it, but after what happened t
Steven, I thought Id do some one day testing!...We ran the stcok
configuration (2000 4.7 with 65mm TB) on the dyno and got some good numbers!
The 4.7 is an impressive platform!
stock (Quick D 3" intake and flomaster cat back) :205.5 peak hp @4800rpm and
267 peak torque @ 3700 rpm (not a real torque monster though)...
Average Hp was 194.3, average torque 248.0ft lbs
with the 69mm F&B prototype,
we saw 209.2 peak Hp @ 5000 rpm (rev limiter hits hard...)
and a max torque of 287.5 Ft lbs...
the averages were up by 1 hp and 1 ft lb of torque...
Hmmmm the stock 65mm TB gives it up at high rpm... @ 5000 rpm the stock
setup was putting out 203 hp and dropping. The 69mm TB was at maximum power
and climbing.
So far there doesnt seem to be a down side to a larger TB, just not as much
upside if the trucks in the stock configuration (for a 2000)as Id like to
see... PCM reflash for speed limiter change and more timing should really
help, although looking down the throat of the plastic intake I see some big
restrictions...We will need to test a 2001 with the 68mm TB stock
arrangement to get some more answers.
More soon

The 205 hp rating seems to be in line with the mods listed. I think that works out to around 250hp or so at the crank. My take on the rev limiter is the bigger TB = better breathing therefore the engine will rev easier and higher than it would before. In this case it also increased the rpm at which peak horsepower is reached. Looks like it could be over the 5000rpm rev limit.

The 4.7L is still making power at 5000rpm...why they put the rev-limiter there, i'll never know. Should be at 6000. ;)

Bernd, should I buy it with my Jet II chip, custom exhaust, and Airiad intake? Think I would feel the gains and go faster? Thank you for answering my time consuming little questions.

According to the dyno figures, that's a lot to pay for just 1 horsepower. Just can't see that as a "good buy" for a stock engine.

I'm new to this, so I'll make it quick. If anyone can point me toward some quick performance mods for my 4.7L 2000 Dakota, I would be very appreciative. I already have the K&N and a Flowmaster 40 series. Thanks.

Hey Bernd, thank you for the information, looks like DC left no stone on turned with the 4.7L.Also I bet we will see a new manifold from the after market people soon, probley some HP to be gained there.

On my post on "K&N filters" I said my butt dyno told me that the addition of a drop in K&N really helped my truck, money well spent. The 4.7L loves cold air.As you said,we need a trick intake manifold to go with a bigger TB and a race PCM.

After reading your post-I think with out a trick manifold, people should save there money on the bigger TB for know,go with a good cold air supply for some cheap HP.Ones again thanks for the information.

A lot of you are talking about different intake systems. K&N is coming out with a FIPK for the 4.7 sometime this summer. People with the 5.9 engine who have tried various intakes know that ultimately the K&N FIPK Gen II gives the best results (in terms of performance) overall. The reasons for that:

1) Single plastic piece, inclusive of the air hat, that goes all the way to the filter. This type of plastic does not conduct heat.

2) Larger (and better form for better air flow) airhat.

3) Heat shield to block engine and exhaust header heat from air going into filter.

I put the Gen II on my truck and was able to add some sheet metal to box in the filter completely. Then I cut the rubber flap out that is on the side of the radiator. Bingo! Pressured fresh air. I know it works because the dyno told me so. I may even gain a hp when I get her over 120 mph.

Hey! Bring that little 287 over here and say that to my face. haha. Just kidding. They are impressive. The first time I saw one run at the track surprised me. He spun off the line, shifted like granny, and still ran 15.2. I told my son that I should have waited another year to buy my truck. Oh well. Such is life. I'll just have to wait for the 5.7 to come out.

If your Momma had ba**s, what would she be?

Hey Bernd was the 4.7 you tested a 230 HP,just wondering.

Have you ever dyno tested a K&N drop in or a Z-tube?
