Subject: 10.4 on the 4.10s!! IP: Logged
Message: Drove into Houston Drive Train at 10:00 this morning with 3.55 gears. Left at 11:15 with 4.10 gears. Total job took 1 hour and 15 minutes with two mechanics that knew their stuff and had the right tools.
Although I have not fully tested the performance, I can really tell a difference. Pat at HDT said to take it easy for about 500 miles. I have "cheated" a little and am very pleased with the quickness.
Total cost - $461.86. Not too bad considering the Dealer wanted about $1,000.
RPM increases: (3.55 to 4.10)
16% at 55 MPH (1550 to 1800)
17.5% at 60 MPH (1700 to 2000)
19% at 65 MPH (1850 to 2200)
20% at 70 MPH (2000 to 2400)
21& at 70 MPH (2150 to 2600)
24% at 80 MPH (2250 to 2800)
The Motive Gears are very quiet. I was told they could quiten down and smooth out after a few hundred miles.
So far so good!!

The $461 was the total: including parts, labor, oil, additive, tax.
I have a 2001 QC Auto, 5.9L. You can check my "Profile" for additional info.

i'm glad to hear it worked out for you!
i knew that you would not be disapointed with the motive gears and the service at houston drivetrain.
them guys do know their $hit, dont they?!
word of advice now that you got the 4.10's,
BE VERY CAREFUL ON WET PAVEMENT! if your not careful the a$$ end of your truck will be facing the wrong direction...lol

Thanks for the tip on Houston Drive Train. Great price and knowledgeable, fast service. I got a 6 month warranty. Is that what you got?
I think I'm having a slight vibration at about 70 MPH. Nothing serious (I hope). Maybe it will smooth out. If not I'll contact HDT and discuss. Have you had any unsual vibrations or noises? It's really not bad. I'm just concerned that it may lead to future problems.
My gears are really quiet. I was expecting them to whine. I do hear a little more Gibson exhaust noise as the engine is reved a little higher at freeway speeds.
Have you had a chance to compare before and after MPG?
After your post about having 3.92 gears instead of 3.55s, I counted my pinion and ring gear teeth. Mine had 11 and 39 = 3.5 ratio. I was thinking (hoping) that you may have mis counted your pinion gear teeth. I recall you saying yours was 10 & 39. You probably counted them several times, but the thought occured to me so I'm passing it along. Wouldn't hurt to count 1 more time.

Message: yeah, i got the 6 month warranty......but i am sure that i wont need it.
i havent noticed anykind of vibrations or noises coming from the rearend. i know that after mine were installed, everything felt different. if you do have a problem, HDT will take care of it. even the guys here at work speak very highly of HDT's ethics, so dont fret.
i was surprised too when my gears didnt whine at all. because my dad told me about how the gears that he used to run, whined really loud. but he was running 6.13's and 5.38's ratios, so im sure his whined like a baby.....lol
i have not compared the MPG at all, because i have a fuel card provided to me by my job, so MPG does not matter to me at all.
i will count my stock gears again, just to make sure. it was dark outside both times that i counted them up, so it is possible that i mis-counted.

Message: Hey Dakaty,,My truck came w/the open 3.55's,, I would much rather have the 3.92's (performance)
I'm not too knowledgefull on rear-end (of cars that is:) But when you changed to 3.92's is it the gears themselves, or another assembly that gives the limited slip feature?
Basically,,,What (material wise) does it take to make a '01 4.7 auto with 3.55's into 3.92's limited slip?

My truck came with the 3.55 LSD rear end. So when I had my rears changed, the LSD parts were reused.
I have heard that it costs an additional $150-$200 to modifiy to a limited slip differential (LSD).
I think that Klc and Dr Q both have "pegleg" rear ends and have investigated conversion to a LSD. They could better tell you what is required to convert to a Limited Slip.

Message: I have rechecked my RPM numbers and have discovered that they have decreased from what was indicated two days ago. My first figures were read immediately after the 4.10 gear change (on the way home form the gear shop). The new figures were taken after driving about 200 miles.
Why is there a difference? Does the computer have to learn the new gear change?
New RPMs are as follows:
2150 at 65 MPH (was 2200 2 days ago)
2250 at 70 MPH (was 2400 " )
2450 at 70 MPH (was 2600 " )
2650 at 80 MPH (was 2800 " )
The RPM readings at the lower speeds did not change.
I wonder if the numbers will continue to change????

Message: thats weird.
at 70 mph mine runs at 2500 rpms since the day that i had my gears installed. (with the 4.7l engine and multispeed tranny)
take a look at your post.....you listed 70mph rpms twice.

Message: Ooops!
Second 70 should be 75.
This is weird. I am certain of the engine speeds (per the tach). During each session, I made several different "readings" at the same speed to insure accuracy.
I was suprised at the large percentage increases reflected for RPMs of 65 MPH and above (19% to 24% RPM increases), reflected by the first reading.
I'm going to try it again in a few days...
