Subject: Stock shifter mod? IP: Logged
Message: Anyone tried shortening the stock shifter a couple of inches to shorten the throw a little? I bought a hurst T-handle shifter to help me grab gears a little better. Mainly 2-3 shift. Now that I can grab the handle easier I think I can shorten it a little maybe 2-3 inches is what I was thinking. I thought I could have my own slightly shorter throw shifter for $35 Cnd. I might eliminate the stock soft rubber bushing in the shifter as well to make for a more positive shifter feel. That might be to noisy though.

Message: I just installed the Hurst handle. Love the feel of it, much easier to hold on to. I always have troubles hitting third because I would have adjust my grip before shifting. Now I just rip away. I am still going to shorten it. When I am in second the shifter is still to long and my arm is in a awquard position. I will chop about 2 inches off of the total length of the shifter and it should fit me just right.

Message: I wish there was a cool gear selector I could get. I finally gave in and ordered one from Dodge, the epoxy putty didn't set and I feel like I'm going to break what's left of the stick off. That looks really good CW.

I really enjoy your posts, especially since we have the same year motor, etc.

Message: CW: Did you install the shift kit itself from Hurst...or just the T-handle? I have long arms to the position of the stick doesn't bother me just the length of the throws. I've heard that shift throws are cut from 4 inchs to about 2 inchs with the hurst. Most people i've heard are pretty satified once they get used to it. If you did install the shift kit...was there much to it?

Message: No I didn't install the shifter just the T-handle. I will shorten the stock shifer. I don't have the 190US lying around to do that plus they don't make a shifter for the 2001 yet only the earlier models. I think I can make this one alot better.

Message: As far as I know, the tire and handling package only includes a swaybar on the CC. If you have a RC, it wouldn't have come with one. If it makes you feel any better, the swaybar that comes with the CC is so small that it doesn't do anything but add weight to the truck anyway. It's only about 1/2" in diameter.

Message: I have a 01 r/c 4x4 and it has the rear sway bar and bigger rear drums.I used a grant evolution shifter knob and it is about a inch longer now and shifts easier,IMO if you shorten the shifter it will shift worse not better, leverage

Message: Well, mines a 01 QC. Haven't measured the bar on the rear sway bar. All I know is that it's really firm stock. Mines also an SLT!
Untill recently, I rode a GS1100, that with stock pipes, stock everything, ran 10's in the 1/4.
Handles awesome too. I know what a fast corner feels like. Paid Invoice for everything I listed earlier also, under 19,000.

Message: I was driving into work this morning, and was thinking about what CW said about a 2" shorter stick. It would be great for 2,4 but 1,3,5 you'll have to pull your whole body foward to complete the shift. My arm has to fully extend when I shift, with the stock shifter height.
If someone made a stick the same style as a Mustang stick, I think that would improve the shifting quality. Than the driver wouldn't have to reach to shift into 1,3,5.
Later,
Anthony
