Subject: Bernd.. Tranny Question IP: Logged
Message: I was talking to guy last night and he was telling me that the transmission in my 96 dakota (5~speed) has computer connections than tell the tranny what to do????? I'm still looking to do a engine swap, and the reason this question arose was "can I keep the same tranny?"
Well I found that some of the V-6 trucks came with the v-8 trannys... How can I tell??? I called the dealer and he said my tranny is a "DDQ~5 speed" Any ideas? I really don't plan on keeping this tranny, but I certainly will if I can! Any ideas what the computer does for the transmision on a manual? Thanks for your help!

Message: Uhhhh...the only thing that the AX-15 has is a speed sensor on the speedo-gear (in the tailshaft of the transmission). Your hand (shifter) tells it what to do.
Most newer V6's will use the AX-15 but some use the NV3500 (V8 transmission). My manuals show a NV1500/NV3500, and AX-15 for the '96 V6.

Message: So I'm to understand that the only Electronical connection to the transmission, is the speed sensor? No other wires running to the computer?
(I'm going to look for my self tonight, but just thought I'd ask)
As for the tranny it self... how do I go about finding out which one I have. I tried the dealer but (they don't know their asses from their elbows) they said it's a "QQD 5~speed"? I'm not sure what that is? Any ideas? Thanks~
