I have read a ton of posts on this subject but still can't decide.

My truck has always run cool never gets even half way to 210 degrees, i will never tow anything or haul anything heavy. I live in NC so there is a wide temperature spread throughout the year.

can i remove the clutch fan and allow the electric fan to handle the cooling? I understand that it is controlled by the PCM. I tried to get it to come on yesterday (idling, AC full bore) but it would not come on and the temp never got any higher then usual, guess its too cold outside.

is this a safe mod? what is the CFM rating for the aux electric fan in our trucks and how does this compare to an aftermarket fan. This sure would be easier then installing another elec. fan and deal with all the wiring and stuff

If you install the 180 degree thermostat, then you can take off the clutch fan. The electric fan cuts in at 210 degrees and you will be fine. Just keep an eye on the temp guage from July-October there in NC. Once you're going 35 mph, no vehicle needs a radiator fan of any kind. Just when you're idling along the strip at Wrightsville Beach! Heh.

What I am trying is hooking up a thermostatic switch up to the auxilary electric fan. That way I can make it kick in at just when the thermostat opens up. None of this 210 crap.

Forgot to mentio I live in Canada. I am not to sure it will keep up when the temp hits 100°f.

I got that info from Tom at Mike Leach Co. who used to work in radiators and cooling systems for 16 yrs before he started flashing computers. You can call him, because I tried the same thing on him last nite. It hits 105-108 regularly (in Summer) around Atlanta way the hell down here in the South. He said it should be fine. If you take 212*, the boiling point of water, you raise that 3* for every pound of pressure you add to a closed system. The standard Dakota system is 15 psi heated, so we are now at 257*F and then we add glycol radiator fluid, right? So another (I think) 7*F for the glycol and the coolant/water mix in your radiator will not boil until 264*F. In Tom's words, 210*F is not hot to a car. You'll be okay. But you should call him. The PCM controls that electric fan, and I am going to try to get him to set it to cut on at 195 when I have my PCM flashed.

I live in Atlanta and run a Flex-a-Lite Black Magic #150 on my 98 5.2
I do not know if it will handle the hot Atlanta summers, but I am prepared to go back to the clutch fan for a few summer months if necessary and switch back the the Black Magic in the Fall. The performance with the electric fan makes it worth it. This is the only fan I trust, (the Black Magic), as I tried Imperial and Perma-Cool and they could not come close to keeping my V8 cool enough.

Rascal, as long as you have the 180 degree T-stat installed, you ought to be okay. Just don't get caught out on I-85 or top end perimeter in August. My Perma-Cool in my V-6 92 Dakota used to give me a heartattack. There was a fusible link that would burn out all the damn time and then I was stuck in Buckhead traffic with NO FAN AT ALL!! I hadn't soldered all the connections which makes the electrical part run hotter and blow things out. SO once I stepped up to a weather-proof fuse and soldered everything, I had no more problems. But you just need to keep an eye on the temp guage.
