TONY

I have two Daks, my 2000 4.7 4x2 automatic turns 2,000 RPM at 60 MPH With the 3;55. and my 2002 QUAD CAB 4X4 4.7, auto, turns 2,000 rpm with 3;92 both at 60 MPH. Go figure...transmissions are the 45 RFE i think the trans and computer balance it out. I really thought it would be 2-300 RPM more on the 4x4.

The '02 45rfe has a double overdrive programed into the software. Makes for a little high speed final drive ratio.

The reason your rpm is the same from the 2wd to
the 4wd ( with the 3.55's and 3.92's) most likely
has to do with the difference in tire diameter

Yes, It's the tires that make the difference.

Gear ratio is always figured with a 28" tire.

The auto (truck) industry adjust variables from there.

YA- I'm not sure what you mean by the gear ratio being figured with a 28" tall tire. The gear ratio is the gear ratio, and it's doesn't matter if its with 25" tall tires or 33" tall tires. You defeniately will feel a difference between two tire diameters as it effectively changes the ratio that is actually put to the ground. That said a 3.92 gear set in a 4x4 dakota with 31" tires is the same set found in a 2wd with 28" tall tires. The 2wd will turn much higher rpms in high gear at 60 MPH though because of the shorter tires. Kevsters two dakotas turn the same rpm because the tires offset the gears as pointed out by Hardbody. Tall tires are one of the big reasons 4x4 dakotas are not as fast as their 2wd twins. That and all the extra weight is rotating mass, which is ten times as devestating as regular weight in acceleration.

yall can go to www.ring-pinion.com and find your rpm at what speed...just put in the tire diameter..speed and it will tell you what rpm you'll be doing...you can choose your final gear ratio and there also is a program to input your tire size and it will tell you about what diameter your tire is...i've tested it and it was pretty close...maybe 50 rpm's off due to tire diameters of different companies vary.
