Subject: RE: Rear Ends IP: Logged
Message: I have a 97 Dakota SLT + (auto. trans, etc.) with standard differential. It has had a diff. whine at 50 to 54 mph since it was new, now has 104k miles. Is there anything that can be done to get rid of the whine? I'm not sure the diff. lub. level is always checked, what should the level be and how do I check it?
Thanks.

Message: On the rear cover there is a rubber plug, remove the plug and you should have oil up to the hole where the plug goes. As for the whine, since its already broken in the only thing I know of is replacing the gears, some of them left the factory with the gears set up wrong, but to last 104K and not break is doing very good, so the only thing I can suggest is live with it or have it rebuilt, or replace with a junk yard axle.
Good Luck
