Subject: changing rims/tires IP: Logged
Message: Question: i have a 2000 dakota cc sport with 15x8 rims with 255/65/15 tires, i am going to get 17x9 r/t rims probebly with stock r/t tire size of about 255/55/17. if i make this change, what besides the speedometer being thrown off will change? will the diff tire diameter drastically effect rear end gear ratio?(its stock 3.55) will it slow down or change 1/4 mile time in anyway? please let me know any info you have bout this question. thanks

Message: The 255/65/15 tires are 28" tall. The R/T tires come 275/55/17, which are 29" tall. You might get some 275/50/17 tires for the 17x9 rims and you will be back to 28" and your speedo will be right on.
If you stay with the 29", then your speedo will be off 3.5%, reading low. When it says 70, you will be going 72.5, not a big deal.
Also for the 275/55/17:
The bigger wheel/tire combo will be slower, may not be measurable. They weigh more, therefore more rotating mass, less speed.
The tire is taller, therefore the gear ratio has effectively been lowered slightly. Effectively the same as a 3.43 with 28" tires.

Message: Kota Boy, I did the same thing to my 2K DAK CC. installed 4 RT wheels I used the 275x50x17 NITTO NT 450 EXTREME TIRES, you wont be dissappointed, speedo was unchanged. I used a steel wheel with a 235x70x15 tire for my spare, it is also 28" in diameter. and sold my 5 15x8 wheels and tires to recoop some of the RT wheel costs.

Message: Wait a sec, stock Dakota R/T tires are 255/55/17 and are 28" in diameter so there would be no error in the speedometer. Lots of r/t guys go to 275's but usually they go with the 45 or 50 seriers and not effect the diameter much. The wheel and tire package on a current 2wd dakota gets a 255/65/16 tire that does have a 29" diameter. This is one disadvantage of the 4.7 -vs- the R/T in stock trim as the R/T in effect has a lower final drive ratio with the 28"'s. The disadvantage of the 17" setup is each wheel and tire combo weighs about 55 pounds, probably more then the 255/65/15 setup you have now.

Message: Sorry my error. I'm suprized that the 9" rim didn't get a wider tire. I always figured it would. The 17x9 rims on my Camaro came with 275/40/17.
Yep the 255/55/17 are 28" and therefore are the same diameter as 255/65/15.

Message: Hey Mark u sound like you know what ur talkin about so heres my deal. I just put sum r/t rims on with 255/60/17 (toyo prox s/t). These replace my stock 15 inch rims. And now my speedometer does even start workin till i get to about 12 mph. If i creep around town about 5-8 mph the speedometer is settin on 0. And also my overhead console does even start to figure my mpg till about 12 mph. And for sum unknown reason if i try to start out fast i get a pause (a laggy feelin) when it shifts to 2nd. I'm takin it to the dealer soon to see if they can set my pc to my tire/rim size. But any info u can offer on these occurances would be gladly appeciated. Thanx

Message: The 255/60/17 tires are 29" tall. Your stock was 28" tall. Therefore your speedo is only off by 3.5% as noted above.
The problem with your speedo not picking up until 12 mph may/may not be related. I would expect that with the old tires you would have seen the same thing until 11+ mph. But it sounds like the speedo pickup is not registering at low speeds.
I cannot think of a reason this would cause a pause on the upshift into 2nd.
Sorry not much help.
