I have a' '01, 4.7, 5spd, LSD, QC, trailer towing and HD engine group. (came with an electric fan).
now with amoung other mods, a 180degree t-stat.

I had already taken my belt driven fan off. If you're keeping yours, I suggest you remove it for the thermostat change, just that one large looking nut behind the fan clutch. A little WD 40 spray, pipe wrench, hammer, came right off. This gives alot of room from the top of the engine for the T-stat change.

Remove the front splash guard under the radiator, a large flat blade screwdriver works well, pry it off, goes right back on, plastic inserts.

Use large pliers, channel-locks, vice grip, etc for the house clamp.

It's two 8mm bolts holding the plastic t-stat housing on. Pop it off, Pop off the t-stat next.
DON'T USE ANYTHING SHARP HERE! THE RUBBER GASKET AROUND THE T-STAT IS ALL YOU USE FOR THE GASKET.

Use a clean bucket to catch the fluid in, and leave it under when you pop the t-stat off, it'll drain more fluid behind it.

Again, you don't use any others on the 4.7! It's a round rubber seal, that you gently slide off the old t-stat, and onto the new one. There's no gasket. Don't worry, it works fine with the old oring seal off the old t-stat. I've seen posts by others who didn't seem to figure this out. I don't know how they get it to seal and seat by trying to make a gasket, or by using sealer. I didn't use any sealer, and no leaks!

You don't have to even open the bleed screw on the top, to the left of the rad. cap, just run it to temp with the cap off.

Hope this helps. I'd think everyone does this themselves, 195-180 t-stat that is. Or would you pay for them to install a $5.99 part. Robert Shaw #755-180.

Thanks for that post Todd. That's pretty good info. How did you hold the water pump pulley on after you took off the clutch fan? Or did you just take it off long enough to do the T-Stat?

Alex,

ditto Mikes post.

My fan is off, don't need it especially with the electric fan from the Heavy duty engine cooling group, that I got with my trailer towing group.

To take the thermostat off of a 4.7 all you have to remove is the front splash guard then just take the 2 bolts out from the t-stat housing, put a drain bucket under it and pull it back with the hose still on,then just reverse to put back.

Art,

spoken like a true samaritan. I actually realized this after I had changed mine, good call though.

Pointy end out eh?

My Robert Shaw t-stat had to use the old rubber gasket though.

Ya Todd I used the same o-ring that was on there aswell and no leaks at all, also if anyone else is going to change the t-stat to a rob-shaw 180 dont worry about the rob-shaw t-stat not having a notch for the o-ring like the stock t-stat has it seals up just fine

I concur with the above in regard to just reusing the o-ring that was on the stock thermostat on the new Robert Shaw #755-180 T-Stat. No leakage after install and 15,000 miles logged in with the
Robert Shaw. As for pulling the belt driven fan
to expedite changing of the T-Stat, well, that is just not necessary and to me is more / unnecessary work. Careful not to overtighten and snap off the two 8mm bols that secure the T-Stat in place. Bill in NY

So, there is no need to add coolant, etc. after the T-stat change? I know my S-10 was a leaker. I had the 160 stat in that truck, are you guys more comfortable with the 180 stat in your trucks?
Where can I purchase the Robert Shaw part? Do they offer a 160?

Thanks
Chris

Bill in NY,

As I mentioned earlier, I had already removed my belt fan, don't need it, especially with the factory elec fan. Actually, it's a VERY easy thing to get off. And the T-stat job was even easier cause it was already gone, on a shelf with my old air hat, etc.

kawzx7,

must for a crotch rocket rider, eh? (your forum name)
Anyway, I don't think they make a 160 for the daks. Otherwise, I'd use it also. Maybe some one will tell us otherwise and give a part #?

Right on, Todd!! Parked in the garage for winter though(I'm in MI). Anyways, do you have to add coolant or anything else as I asked before. If not, I will try to give it a try soon. Where can I get this particular T-stat?

Yes you have to add coolant to make up for what came out,its just common sense and yes there is a 160 but you will get a MIL light for engine not warm enough in the winter,in the summer you would probably be okay with a 160 t-stat

Well, Opps,

I caught most ALL the fluids, and ended up discarding some.

I didn;t add ANY fluid or coolant, use a clean bucket, and leave it there when you pop the t-stat off the block, as some more will come out that was still trapped behind it.

kawzx7,

My last bike was a GS1100, ran 10's allday long, without any mods, stock mufflers!
10's!!!!!!!!!!! WOW that was a rush, this car v-8 thingy is OK, I love my dak, but,,,,,,,,10's-STOCK!

I've checked Pep Boys, Kragen(Checker) and AutoZone. No luck finding this t-stat. I'm in SoCal, and the local AutoZone stopped carrying the GT755-180 about 7-8 months ago. No one seems to have an aftermarket crossover for the t-stat in the 4.7L. Besides, I don't want to buy another 195 t-stat anyways. Need some help locating this part or an equivalent, on-line or otherwise.
Thanks

Bought my Stant 180° T-stat #65358 from a local Advance Auto Parts. These can also be found at www.partsamerica.com. Website will guide you to a local store that will carry it also. My local store used the part number of 45358 instead of the 65358 ... not sure why this was.

AC, I think Kragen was one of the stores that carried the Stant T-stat.

Thanks Tracy, if Kragen doesn't then I know that Pep Boys does, I saw Stants there today looking for the GT755-180. Did you have to do anything different for the install of the Stant? Or is it virtually the same t-stat as the RobertShaw?

As far as I know it should be basically the same and you shouldn't have to do anything different. I did pretty much did exactly what these guys did hear. Used the old rubber gasket and haven't had any problems or leaks.

I don't know the answer to that. Hopefully someone else does.

Where did you get your IAT Adjuster and H.O. Cams? How much did they cost? Did you get the Jeep Grand Cherokee cams? Did you install then yourself and if so was it very difficult? Special tools?

Thanks! ~Tracy

If you would have read all the old posts you would have known that removal of the belt was not needed.IF you put the T-stat in properly then your problem probably is air in the system, follow the top rad hose to the block and you will see a pipe thread plug remove it when filling with fluid to get rid of air in the cooling system.
