Subject: 5.2 or 5.9 swap ?'s IP: Logged
Message: OK, here's the thing. I'm an idiot when it comes to this stuff so bear with me. I have a '93 4x4 w/ 3.9l. I'm taking an engine class at school and I want to swap in a v8. I've read a few posts but am still needing info.
I am trying to decide between the 5.2 & 5.9. I know the 5.2 will be easier, but how much harder would it be to use the 5.9? I want to keep my 5 speed and I've heard that might be a problem.
Also, will I need to swap the engine mounts for both of them?
Here's what I know about the 5.2 (correct me if I'm wrong)- I'll need new computer, harnesses, new fan, but what else? Is it similar for the 5.9?
I figure if I'm going to build a motor up from scratch, the BIGGER THE BETTER! Thanks for any info.

Message: ok, you were right you are an idiot, the only difference between a 5.2 and a 5.9 is bore a stroke, basiccly anyway, the way they are balanced are different. but they are of the same engine family. you don't need new motor mounts, nor a new fan, you will need to find a wiring harnes for a 93 v8, all you need is from the firewall, foreward, all the accessories from the v6 will bolt on the the front of the v8 so no need to change any of that as far as a tranny goes, it will bolt onto a v8, and it should handle the power, the 3.9 is a 318 with 2 cylinders removed, they have the same bore and stroke, they are IDENTICAL. so find a wrecked v8 truck same year as yours and take the computer, wiring harness and the long block, leave the accesories, it'll save some money,.

Message: Yes an engine from the same year will make things much easier. Or you could build a rippin carbuerated motor and make it really easy.

Message: On the same not, would it be possible to just swap intake manifolds to make an EFI 318 into a carbuerated one? I ask only because I may want to put my 93 Dakotas 318 into an older car and dont want to mess with computers, smog, electronics, etc.

Message: Andrew,
You can get a MP Magnum intake that will accept a carb. They use them on the Magnum crate engines. Check with Mancini.
Give some thought to using teh fuel injection though. It is an awsome and almost bullet-proof system. Not to mention the improved throttle response and gas mileage.
Good luck.

Message: Okay I have been told by some one who has been working on mopars since he was a kid and his father has tought him evry thing about it now I to am tring to swap out my 3.9L v6 for something bigger. Like 5.2 L. I was told it does need diffrent mounts so is this true or not and will need a new wiring harness????. I have a 1990 Dodge dakota with a 151,000 on it and it still jumps off the line for a v6. I want a little more speed off the line just in case I need it I am not going to compete, will maybe just for fun w/ friends but nothing serious.. I am going to do the body work my self It needs all new paint and right behind the drivers door (below the cab window there are some dents This will be the hardest I think to get out. the drivers side front wheel well has some rust and the rear pass. whell well has rust too other then that the body seems fine. I might just try to change the whole bed becouse i have heard bodo is not so good for wheel wells any idears or help... About the engines I would like to have a 5.2 or5.9 liter in place of the v6 but If it is going to be a headahe then I don't no I have been told the 5.2L is pretty simple to puyt in..???? just new mounts and wiring harrness and the computer if I have one...Now whaty about the computer do I need another one...And do I even have one some was saying some 90's and some don't..Will I need a new tranny too for the 5.2 or 5.9L???? if all else fails what could I do to a brand new 3.9L V6 to make it a little faster??/ Any help will be greatly appriciated..Thanks
