Subject: Antilock rear on a 2001
IP: Logged

Message:
Some people have been talking about powerbraking for a good drag launch. I was able to do that in my old 5 speed pickup, but it did not have antilock rear brakes. Anyone try it or find a way around it so it does not cause damage. I tried using the antilock rear in the snow a couple of weeks ago and it did not seem to do any thing, I just slid.

Can you do that on a 5 speed? I thought that you could only do that on an auto.

You rev up the engine pretty good and then drop the clutch and hit the brake right after. The truck will go about a foot but the rear tires just start to spin. Again I have not tried it in the Dak yet.

Power braking is when you hold the brake just enough to keep the vehicle from rolling and bring up the rpm. That sets you up for a launch. Rear tires shouldn't break loose prior to the launch. Both of my vehicles have antilock brakes and I am able to do a burn out to warm up the tires (although useless on street tires) and then power brake them in the lights.

Power braking a 5 speed is almost impossible. It really isn't even called that for 5 speeds. If you are real fancy with the foot work you can preload the clutch and driveline by releasing the clutch until it is bearly touching and wants to creep forward. You have to be giving it gas while doing this and holding the brake with the same foot at the same time. Takes a lot of practice. TO leave the line, you will have to slip your foot off of the brake and clutch at the same time while operating the gas petal. There are devices used for this but aren't usually used in an everyday driver. I don't drive standards but I think that Line Lock is one of them.
In short, you can't power brake a standard transmission.
