Subject: Ram Air?? IP: Logged
Message: I have a Gen II v6 and just purchased a ram air hood for it. I was noticing that almost nobody on this site has ram air and most just go with either prefabbed or homebrewed cold-air intakes. Does anyone have an EDUCATED OPINION on ram air. I don't want to hear some moron talk about what this person said or that person said, just people with actual experience. Or if you have a proven source with some #s on them it would be cool too.

Message: cold air is better, so,it doesn't matter how you get it(thru the hood or thru the grill )if you go thru the hood it needs to have a good seal so that you don't get hot air from under the hood.most people don't want to spend all that money for a hood when they can get cold air alot cheaper.i am using a homemade cold air intake on my 93 cc v8..any------way,you could give us some of your findings, compare stock to ram air.i think you will find, MORE COLD AIR IS BETTER!

Message: Built a box around the filter on my GEN II. Opened up the rubber flap next to the radiator. Whamo! Ram air. Guess what? Can't really tell a difference. Didn't show up on my e.t. slips at least.

Message: I was under the impression that the difference between cold-air intakes and Ram Air is that with Ram air a large amount of air is basically forced into the airbox and in my eyes appears to be the ultimate low restrictive intake system. I know that some other systems are excellent but I also realize that the cost of the hood is too much for some compared with a homebrewed or pre-fabbed intake.

Message: the benifits of ram are are minor lots of cold air is the key. at 100mph you have less then 1psi of positive pressure. do the math which filter set up has more area to suck air? which one gets a colder source of air? hood set ups are usually better, however you have to decide if the price/hp is worth it. normally only a couple ponys are gained, but sometimes the et's improve.
all in all its a very iffi(how do you spell) mod some cars gain some don't, but usually the gain isn't worth the 600+ you paid for a hood and intake.

Message: I actually got a wicked deal on my hood. If anyone is familiar with Terry DeLong and the hoods he produces, I have one of his for my GenII. I have a close friend who has Terry's old 92 which has a hood on it and when my friend acquired the truck an extra came with it. He recently decided he didn't want the extra so I bought it for $400. Pretty good deal considering it's never been mounted. At this point he hasn't decided about the fate of the airbox due to some possible mods for his truck in the future but the hood will be functional in the very near future.

Message: Conig hit it on the head. Even at 100mph you'd be lucky if you got 1.0psi of true "ram air" or real "positive" pressure in the airbox. Kawasaki has proved this with their big 1200cc sport bike. And it has a thouroughly designed air intake "system" intended to speed up incoming air flow and a sealed high volume airbox.RAM AIR is a great sounding name, but that's all it really is, a name. RAM AIR sounds better than FRESH AIR or COLD AIR intake. At least we all know that COLD AIR intake really does means more performance.
