Message: Sup Jordo,
I too have an 87 3.9l Dak, There are a few things that you can do, and possibley one other, but I'm still doing research on the last one. The first thing that we can do to make our Gen I V6ers gain some ponies is to upgrade the engines breathing. What I mean by that is replace the stock manifolds with aftermarket headers, and a catback exhaust. When doing this, make sure you get rid of the OEM catylic converter, cuz it has a honey comb fillament that is designed to burn spent exhuast that isn't burned. It restricts air flow cutting horse power. You can also have work done to your heads, and change your cam, as well as insert a jet performance II chip. Also changing the ignition will help out a bounch too. I just found out from reading post on this sight that if you find a premagnum v8 with a throttle body you can put that on your truck as well. I'm pretty sure you will need the manifold as well as the tbi. If you don't want to go that route, depending on if you have a carborated 3.9 (which I do) or one with a tbi you can have work done to your Carb.
The second option which I'm still researching is, actually converting a premagnum v6 into a magnum v6 by utilizing the heads, intake, injectors and pcm unit from a magnum engine. I'm not sure if this is possible, do to a possible difference in bolt pattern on the heads between the two motors. My dad who is a builder of Dodge race cars says that it isn't possible cuz the Magnum head have a different bolt pattern than the premagnum heads, but Burnd who know a sh#t load about Dak's say that it might be possible. If you choose to go this route, you are gonna have to do a lot of research, like myself. If you want I'll keep you posted on anything that I find. One other option to think about is swaping out the premagnum v6 for a magnum v6. Go to your local junk yard and look for a crashed Dak, or check out Ebay or Moparchat.com. I Hope I've been some help to you, and if you find anything else out that might help me in my quest for money ponies for my 87 Dak, Let me know, Untill than take care and don't give up on your old girl.
