Message: But what if you used the resistor and use a switching terminal so you can turn it on or off. When you are needing your speed limiter off you don't really care about watching your speed limit unless your curious about how fast you are actually going for some kind of record. Or you can buy the 2.5L DAK and ther is no limiter.

Message: A resistor would NEVER work on that signal.
The speed sensor sends PULSES to the PCM. The PCM COUNTS these ON and OFF signals vs. time to calculate speed. The signal is probably between 0VDC and 5VDC or something like that. It would be derived from either a magnetic pick up or optical, etc.
Your temp sensors are variable resistors called THERMISTORS and the ones used on our engines give more resistance as the temp decreases. That's why installing more resistance in series would give the PCM a "colder" reading.
Also, I haven't checked into it or anything but the PCM COULD be using the same speed signal for your speedometer, speed limiter as it uses for SHIFT points on your tranny. I don;t know if these new tranny's have an internal governor or not to feed back speed but it's probably not a good idea to mess with the speed sensor when it's moving!

Message: Your v6 runs at over 115 mph in the 1/4 mile???? You lying bastard!!!! Take your v6 to the track once, you'll be lucky to hit 85 pmh in the 1/4!!! Damn, who do you think you are fooling? We aren't all that retarded. BTW, dodge trucks shut down at 114, not 115 it just looks like 115 because you cant read your speedo's.

Message: Graphite is right on the speed sensor. It is an encoder that sends a pulse. There's nothing you can do with it. On Fords you can unplug them and it will still shift like it's supposed to. I never tried it on a Dodge. On both Ford and Dodge the speedometer will quit working when you unplug it.

Message: Hey guys,
I did some checking about the different auto trannys used in the Dakotas. I was told by the Dodge service center that if your truck uses the 46RE (Electronically controlled, 1996 and newer)It does require a speed input to control the internal governor for shift points. Also the newer Daks use an electronic speedo that also requires an input from the ABS. HOWEVER, If you have an older Dak with the 46RH (Hydrolically controlled, 1995 and older)like mine,it still requires a speed input to lock up the torgue converter and give you 4th gear overdrive. But NOT from the ABS. I found that out myself by pulling the fuse to the rear ABS and the tranny shifted fine, but when I disconnected the speedo cable at the tranny it wouldn't go into overdrive or lock the converter at all and it still cutout at 115 indicated speed in both cases. Don't know if this info is of any help to anyone, but I thought I'd share it with you all anyway. The quest for the answer continues! haha!
Mike
PS - For clarification, my truck has the 46RH. It's a 1993 LE Club Cab.

Message: I'm assuming just by reading this last page that everyone one here is looking for a way to override the speed limiter... You want the cheap and easy fix??? Just turn on your warning flashers... Easy enough??? Just wondering... May not look the best going down the track or change shift points, but you can do it from the drivers seat:)) This desables the speed limiter for emergency cases... Nice huh ; )) Fire departments do it all the time around here...

Message: If Greg is right about the flashers disabling the speed limiter then we ALL are going to look pretty freakin stupid! hahahaha. Wouldn't it be something that after 4 pages of post on the subject with real answers on how to defeat it it came down to a simple thing as turning the flashers on? R/T Blues, if it works, let all of us know would ya?! I'd try it, but my truck is in the tranny shop undergoing a rebuild at the moment.

Message: I have also heard that you can Hold your ingnition swith in the starting position with a 5 speed and it will shut the limiter off. All I know is the I have the dinky 4cyl, and it does not have a speed limiter at 115mph. Maybe they thought it would never reach that speed.

Message: while driving, turning the key to the "start" position does work. I dont know if it will work on all dakotas but i know it works on several different motors, trannies and years. I have done it in my 98 3.9 and in several others.
only thing is, when you turn it to the start position, you loose everything on the dash except the tachometer.

Message: Well I know for a fact that the flashers will work on all or atleast all makes and kinds of vehicles... The Chevy's Ford's Yoter's and Dodge's all will work with the flashers... In fact some people around here will get really going "if in a real hurry or race" and their engines will cut out then they put the flashers on and their back and a going... Personally I wouldn't put my truck past 115... The last time it hit 115 I didn't even wont to think about going faster... It was all I could do to keep the feather in the right lane :)) I recomend good suspension and weight distribution if going this fast in these light trucks ; ))
