 Subject: Winter Driving Without Your Rubbers

Ah, that would be without the rubber flap (ya know, for increased air flow to those with aftermarket intakes with big honkin filters)
Went to do my bi-weekly fluid checks and tightening under the hood, and whoa...salt, sand, grit, residue, you name it, just starting to show up on the 4 inch Z-tube and around the 'cone' opening of the filter
Only one short drive on clear roads, in some fluries with sleet, but after 6 inches were dumped, was all it took
My rubber flap is back on, don't even want to worry about any of that suff making it past the filter, into the tube, and down into TB/engine
Just a f.y.i. in case ya all forgot you even had the rubber flap removed.
(slightly detuned for winter dirving: flap on, 195 T-stat back in)

You are lucky to HAVE that flap... My 2000 Dak never had one from the factory. (yes- mine was factory orderd October 1999)
You have confirmed my "fears" of going with an "open" filter all year round. I am starting to seriously consider the "true cold air intake" that draws from INSIDE the fender. (some drilling required)
Here in Vermont... we have salt-coverd roads 4 months of the year. I am certain that my engine would not like to "breathe" that stuff for very long.

I never took mine off for that reason: here in Canada we get considerable sand and salt on the roads. This week being mild, I have sprayed off my truck 3 times and it is still filthy, I shudder to think of that being ingested by my engine

I took my cold air tube off after my vacation in Ontatio because I saw too much salt in the tube. I had an aluminum flex tube going from the stock box to the grill with the flap turned aside. I put the stock plastic snake pipe back on with the end cut off to fit my the MSD box. This will keep the road crap to a minimum.
I also noticed a slight boost in bottom end and a decrease in top end.

This is what the salt did last year without the rubber flap on.
For this winter a put back the rubber flap took out my homebrewed intake, reinstalled the factory airbox with a fresh air filter and ran a 3" flex dryer hose.

I'd like to undo the flap and fold it back with the option of closing it for bad weather, otherwise I think I will leave it on. There's way too much crap on the road in the bad weather to make it worthwhile taking it off.

Yeah, they sure do - my truck is usually the color of yours, which isn't good since the paint is BLACK. I've sprayed it 4 times in the last week.

The stock fenderwell I feel doesn't have enough intake openings for a high reving v-8, IMHO!
The stock box has drain holes in the bottom, I even enlarged mine. Here in the Houston/Galveston area, I'm running w/o my rubbers(flap). I even have a plastic wall shielding most of the engine compartment air, to my homebrew intake with a K&N insert. (I would go with the tube end stlye, but my inserts only a few months old.)
I get better Throttle response, smoother power band, AND, better MPG!

They use more salt than sand over here in Toronto. Bloody salt ruins everything, my poor truck. I powerwashed it on Thursday then again on Saturday, just to keep it clean, now it's snowing and the forecast is calling for 5-10cm.
Guys if you don't have a powerwasher, I recommend it, it's excellent for getting the salt off. They don't cost that much.

I had a post asking about this very subject, "Cold air intakes and Snow". Never got a response but I found what I needed here. I left my flap in and I'm monitoring the filter condition. LOTS of salt on the roads here in Wisconsin. That's because people won't take the time to learn how to drive on snow/ice. Gotta still go 60+, talk on the cell phone, wrastle the kids, do the hair, read the paper (really!) instead of drive! Opps! Pontificating again. See ya.
