Subject: Ignition coils??? IP: Logged
Message: Has anyone tried the Hypertech or Accel direct replacement coils for the 3.9/5.2/5.9 ? The Hpertech claims to deliver more voltage, but, it also cost more! Any comments??
Thanks,

Message: I have an MSD 6a ignition and am using the Accel 140021 coil.
Fits directly in the factory mounts. You can order a wiring coupler (PN 140021 AH) and it couples directly to the late model wiring harness (1997 and up, I think - better check).
intense99dak (On MOPARCHAT) provided the specs for it -
Primary resisitance 1.0 Ohms
Secondary resistance 12.7 k Ohms
Max Volts 42,000
and a bunch of other techie cr@p.
I have had no problems with it.
However, I didn't notice any performance difference after the install. I replaced a perfectly good OEM coil and already had my MSD in place.
You can get the coil and adapter at Speedtweaks!!!

Message: Stock coils are just great, unless you are running 500 hp and can't afford for one cylinder to misfire (cylinders loaded with a lot of fuel for racing)ie, using bout 1 or 2 gallons per pass.
MSD is fine for the street but you should remember, the system or control module should not be located under the hood (to much heat). The next time you see a pro or sportsman car notice the location of the MSD.
As for ACCEL, I might use it on the lawmmower, I know I will not be far from home!!!
Good Luck...

Message: I think I have read all sorts of posts of people here who had the stock coil fail. I plan to put the Accel on my 5.2 and maybe the MSD 6A. I have never heard of an Accel failing..I have seen them go through ungodly conditions on Harleys over the years and they stand up fine.

Message: I, too, have the Accel coil with MSD 6a setup. I noticed better throttle response when I installed the coil but that was it; no noitceable increase in mileage. This setup allows you to overgap the plugs, if you wanted to...
I have not heard anything bad about the Accel coil either.

Is the Hypertech a direct replacement?
Where are you getting it?

Message: MSD has proven to be the best for years , a blaster coil will fit nice in the stock location.Use a blaster II or blaster III and 2 coil brackets, just remove the stock coil and use the 2 bolt holes for the new brackets.Don't use a resistor the computer controls voltage to the coil. Change the plugs to 3923's , open the gap up .005" - .010" more than factory specs(this is what helps performance). I have a blaster III , it works and looks great, the engine runs better cold and starts better. Don't buy a coil just because of a high voltage claim,as volts go up amps and duration go down unless the input voltage is incressed or the coil is built better.

Message: Got my new Hypertech coil today! At first glance it looks just like the OEM coil, but, after closer inspection it has many subtle differences. So anyway I installed it--fits just like the original. After a couple of test runs I can't tell any difference in performance, but, only time will tell! At $50 from Summit it seems an OK deal(the price for OEM style coils averaged $30). If it develops any problems I'll let you guys know!

Message: I just recently did the 36k spark plug change.I did the whole ignition at once from the coil(put an accel)to the rotor, cap, wires, plugs.I found it amazingly easy to change all 6 plugs(got the 3.9),except I think they hired freakin' Godzilla to install spark plugs over there at Hamtramk(is it still there or Detroit?) but the 1,6,5,4,3,2 firing order makes it convenient to pull all the wires off at once. The manifold even shows the firing order and the direction of rotor rotation I guess in case you get confused.I found that after 36 thou, the plug electrodes had eroded an average of.012" each.Where they should have been.040 according to the hood sticker, they were all over.052.I'm frankly surprised the engine ran as smooth as it did.But it seems that it now runs a little different.I can't say better or worse,I think the PCM is still learning to deal with new ignition parts? Also the one thing that really freaked me out was when I pulled the original CHAMPS out they indicated I was/am running lean!I say this because of the ashy white residue on the tips. The reason I don't understand this is because I have done the IAT and TPS sensor mods to "richen the fuel mixture.Could it be that all the 'stuff'I put on for air management(i.e.t/b headers 1.7rr's)is flowing more air than my injectors can compenste for? This confuses the $#!^ outta me.Should I just put the IAT in the A/C vent?

Message: Ignition coils are a funny thing. They have the potential to make a certain spark voltage based on build specs. The key word here is potential. On a stock motr in good condition you only need about 30K volts, so that all it makes. If the coil is built to a 50K volt potential, it will still only make 30K, because that's all it needs to create a good spark.
So replacing a good stock coil with a high quality afetrmarket (expensive) part will do absolutly nothing. It does make your wallet lighter, so maybe that will add some speed at the top end.
As for the Crane units, I had one on my '95 5.2 for quite a while. It was a multiple spark capacitive discharge unit, and it did make the truck start and run better, especially on cold winter mornings. Never broke in 60K miles or so.

Message: Keep in mind guys, If, you still have the OEM plug wires, your not going to notice much difference.
Get some MSD wires, 80 ohms-ft., Taylor wires are like 50 ohms-ft. but are expensive, like $150.
I did notice an improvement in performance and torque and like 2mpg improvement in city driving. On highway, 1 mpg. A 5.9 spinning at 2,000 - 2,400 RPMs just sucks gas like there's no tomorrow.
Setup:
MSD 6a
Accel Universal Super Coil
MDS Wires
Home made Intake
Flowmaster 70 series

Message: I have a 91 pontiac sunbird with a 2.0 4 banger. I just recently bought an accel universal super coil, k & n air filter, Bosch platinum 4 plugs, msd wires, accel dist. cap and rotor, velocity funnel, and resonator tip and noticed about a 15 horse jump. I had most of everything before the super coil already and noticed the coil worked a LOT better than standard oem ignition coil!

Message: LATEX>>>>>>>> Your lean look on your plugs is not there fault. You can read a problem on a plug but to change to hotter/colder or different brand fixes nothing unless your only off a very tiny amount. You have another problem . Have you checked your 02 censer voltage.

Message: ROSEBUD: just for your info everything i did to the car was outta my own money, and by the way i dont see the point in putting 2000 dollars in some piece of crap 20 inch rim or stereo. but if you must know its got stock rims and stock tires. i live in a small town where you gotta worry about a cop being around the next turn. i am living in a s##t hole of a town kinda like the slums of hazzard county. im used to big cities that i lived in my whole life. im stuck here with a family of my own, im happy, and for what this little town has to offer, the cars fast enough! theres really nowhere you can open it up at, so you need acceleration, and that whats it had with the torque just not enough power to get the speed up!!! and besides, as long as its not your car what do you care for anyway? and my moms welfare check? that stupid, fat, no good for nothin piece of crap can rot in hell for all i care!!! you ever heard of projects? well consider this car kinda one, its deffinitely not the othe vehicle i drive!!!
