Message: i can't decide which is the best setup. i have tried the stock air cleaner w/ a 9 in. round filter(k&n)---- the 9 in. as an open element---- and a newer air hat with 3 in. furnace tube and a k&n cylinder style near the cold air entry in front of the truck. i even removed that plastic flap in the grill. my experience around drag racers says cold air is the best! what do youns guys do.(i am from pittsburgh) my truck is a 93 v8 2wd. first v8 i have ever owned.

Cold air is more dense...carrying more oxygen, and makes more power.
Best case: Install a '97+ airhat from a Dakota/Durango and either a custom fabricated intake tube (with the filter close to the grill opening) or some black sewer pipe from Home Depot (works well also).

Message: i use the 14x3 open element with the xstream lid. my gtech showed me making more power with this setup than with a home-brew fipk. i ran 4 runs before and after, all runs i made more power with the open element.
