Subject: Holley 52 mm TB problem
IP: Logged

Message:
I have had a Holley 52mm TB on my 5.9L since September. Shortly after I installed it I began getting a P1494 check engine light error message. This message deals with an abnormal leak detection pump pressure switch reading.

I took the truck to the Dealer several times to get this corrected (under warranty). Finally the Dealer's head mechanic/tech said that the cause of the trouble was the TB. I contacted Holley and told them the story. They EMAILED me and said that there was no way the TB has anything to do with this trouble code, etc, etc. Since Holley makes Dodge's TBs you would think they knew what they were talking about.

Well I just re installed my OEM TB and noticed that the vacuum hose from the TB (fitting located right by the MPA sensor) goes right to the Leak Detection Pump. I tried to blow and suck air through this fitting on the Holley and it is totally plugged!!!! The same fitting flows air like crazy on the OEM.

If anyone with a Holley 52mm TB would check this fitting to verify that alot of suction is present, I would appreciate a reply. The fitting is located on the front, "passenger" side of the TB. All you do is unplug the hose and listen/feel the suction.

I tried to call Holley today, but they are closed for the holiday. I have EMAILED them. Hopefully they will replace/repair my TB.

This is the second "quality control" problem I have had with the Holley TB. Maybe I should have gone with Fastman, Hughes or Flowmetrics or??

Bill

PS: so far, I'm not getting a check engine light with the OEM TB.

That is why you are gettin the check engine light the leak detection pump isn't seeing vacuume. I am sue that holley will replace the TB without hassle.

Do you have an opinion as to whether performance will be effected when the TB works correctly?

I sure miss the sound of the Holley. It sounds like a giant four barrel sucking air through the FIPK. The OEM hardly makes any noise.

It won't affect the performance in the least. It is a emmissions only thing. If you want to you can relocate the vac line to the side of the manifold to one of the open ports. The funtion will be the same it just needs to see manifold vacuume. That way you could put the holley unit back on and won't have to send it back and go without it. I know once you have the power it seems like you can't do without it when it is gone.

Just got my Holley TB and what the is going on?
Can any one tell me why, when I put an after market throttle body on my truck the idle is over 1100 RPMS, but stock is 600? I have no clue. I have a Hughes engines stage 3 and it is junk also. I have spent over $1000 on throttle body's to find they don't work for $hit. Does anyone else have same problems?

Sorry for the outburst, but I am tired of messing with TB.

Any Suggestions will be taken to heart.

Thanks again.

Only part on my motor that is stock is the TB. (Go Figure)

Have you tried an F&B throttle body? I had great luck with them on my 360 and later my 408. I just ordered one for my 4.7.

I am kind of afraid to buy another TB after dealing with all these high Idling issues. This Holley is really awesome to look at, but god forbid it works like crap. Did your Idle RPMS increase at all with aftermarket TB?

I had no idling issues with any F&B throttle bodies on my 360/408. I haven't installed the unit on the 4.7 yet. I'm waiting for it to show up.

Are you sure you installed the tps sensor correctly? (its on the drivers side of the TB) It has to have tension on it to operate properly.

Do the butterflys close all the way at idle? There is an adjustment screw on the linkage side.

Where are you located? What year and engine do you have? Maybe we could swap TBs to see how they worked?

Frog,

Contact Bruce Bridges at Flometrics on the TB issue. He's (in my opinion) the best out there on the throttle bodies.

Wasn't it Bruce's former partner that went over to Holley and worked on their 52mm TB for the Magnum motors? I knew one other guy that put one on his truck. He had it on for a week. He felt like he lost power over stock so he went back to the stock TB and sent the 52mm Holley back. Stick with an F&B.
