Subject: Z-tube on a 4.7 in Calif.

Here in "The Glutton State" (oops... I mean GOLDEN state), the Z-tube is not legal (no C.A.R.B number), but I wanna know if there are any negative effects on the engine or related smog-type items if I were to use it anyway. Since it isn't legal, I wonder if I can evn buy it here. Also... does anyone have an opinion as to the best cold-air system (Z, Airaid, QuickD, etc). Any advice (especially from the Sages: Bernd, Bob, et.al.) is happily accepted.

I'm not Bernd or Bob, or even et al, but here is my 2 cents...

I've got the airaid on my CA version (I live in FL now so no smog inspections!). Not bad, but it keeps the stock air hat and flexible tube that runs from the filter to the air hat. Even so, it makes a nice sound and probably adds a couple of ponies. If you're going to spend the money, I'd try the Ztube. I'm considering the switch myself.

By the way, I'm not sure what makes the Ztube CARB illegal. Is it the lack of the little air hose that sucks air from just aft of the filter? (the airaid does retain that hose as well) If that's all it is, it would seem to be easy enough to drill a hole in the Ztube, then weld in a small nipple on there to attach the hose. Any other ideas on what makes a Ztube CARB illegal?

I wonder if it's not so much CARB illegal as it just has not been CARB approved? Maybe they just didn't fuss with the procedures involved to get it approved?
I don't see where a z-tube would affect emissions. Butttt I've been wrong once or twice before ... hehehe.

That's correct. It's the approval process that it needs to go through. In Calif. most SMOG stations won't pass your vehicle if you have parts installed that are not CARB approved. It doesn't matter if it will pass emissions or not. CARB approval testing is expensive and some companies opt not to go through it.

Good point about the "C.A.R.B." thing, but one thing I've noticed is that ALL of the cold-air kits seem to be illegal in Calif. We're all still holding our collective breath for K&N to release the GenII (funny... aren't they in Calif?) for the 4.7. My original concern was - and still is - if I use one of these systems anyway, would it do any sort of damage to my Calif-based smog equipment (maybe rendering it useless and otherwise unable to pass future smog tests)? Sigh... guess I'll know in two state-regulated years!

Just remember, there's more to "Smog Legal" or "Emissions Legal" than what comes out of the tailpipe...and it does make a difference.

As for using the Z-Tube, by all means....go for it. Just keep your factory stuff handy when it's time to get it "smogged" again.

I agree with Bernd. Keep your stock parts for use when going to get inspected. As for any of the systems talked about actually causing damage to any emissions equipment, I wouldn't worry about it. I've had my airaid and gibson single cat back for about 10,000 miles (out of at total of 16,000) with no problems. All any of these things do is improve airflow, which should have absolutely no effect on the reliability of any emissions control devices. As a sidebar, the service manager at the dealer I go to is purchasing a cat-back and intake for his 2001 4.7 quad cab based on driving mine. I think that right there says something about whether or not these simple mods affect reliability.
