Message: Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe you guys have the Dana rear ends, which they are now equiped with a Chrysler rear end. The Dana rear ends were always sloppy of corse the rear end I refer to is the one that's in the dakota, durango, and ram I don't mean your hoped up hot rod.

Message: Had this issue soon after I took delivery of the truck (under 1,000 miles).
D/C says "this is characteristic of the 2001 Dakota". They refused to check it.
Good thing they put that in print. I'll bring it with me when it's time to REPLACE the diff.

Message: We also have a slight whine out of our '97 Dak V6 Auto, 4x4, CC w/8-1/4" rear. She now has over 108,000 miles and runs strong! I was a bit concerned when I first heard the noise ( bought early '00) but I just installed a PowerTrax No-Slip diff and everthing checked out fine inside. Hey, if it ain't gone bad in that many miles add the good lube and drive !! By the way, for those of you who don't have a LS diff check out www.powertrax.com

Message: My '98 started whining at about 30,000 miles. When I took it in they also said it was normal. I insisted that they look it over. They said it was bearings...$1300. Didn't matter in the long run, the mechanic only put 2 of 12 bolts back in the diff cover, seized it up and they had to replace the whole rear end assembly (free) I have been running Synthetic fluid, ever since and had no trouble (or noise)at all. I'm told not to go with Synth fluid if you tow much though. if you change the fluid dont forget the LSD additive

Message: There has been several "problems" with the differentials on Dakota/durangos since Dana started to use ALUMINUM cases. The "buzz" is that the 'spreader' that is used to "open up" the case to install the gears tends to distort the aluminum. The ol' steel cases would flex back into shape after the use of the spreader.
Another reason for the whine is that the aluminum has a different density... thus different harmonics than the steel. DC has tried to glue "dampaning pads" to the aluminum case with various success.
BOTTOM LINE: DC is now roumerd to be considering moving away from its longtime supplier DANA and instead go with another manufacturer.
(ref the BUZZ website report on 12/17/99)
... Apparently DC and Dana are not seeing eye-to-eye about who is responsable for all of the consumer complaints (noise / sloppiness) with the rear axles.

Message: Not to discredit you bruce but the axles under the Dakotas and Durangos are corprate axles made of cast iron. The ones that you are refering to are the Jeeps. They use the Danas aluminum diffs. I have done so many of those differentials that I can rebuild them in 1.7 hours.

Message: Was going to post this in a new thread, but this is close enough.
I don't have a whine or howl at speed from the rear end, but I do have a groan. I hear it only at parking lot speeds when turning very hard (full steering lock or close to it). Any ideas? The truck currently has just under 30,000 miles on it and the diff fluid has been changed every 12,000 by the dealer.
Thanks

Message: (CW) THANKS...THAT EXPLAINS A LOT OF THINGS! I also read the JGC forums to glean additional information about the 4.7L V8. I must have got confused with information overload.... (easy for me to do ;-)
My Dakota shop manual says that the CORPERATE axles are under there... I should have consulted it FIRST and would have seen these are not the same differential cases as used on JGC.

Message: I have the same problem with an 98 Durango, just minutes after I drove off the dealer lot. I brought the truck back to the dealer, he sent me to the repair shop. The mechanic said it needed the rear-end replaced. He said they have to fix it or refunded me the full amount that I paid. They fix it and took another $1000.00 off the price.

Message: Hey Dan, I have the same groan as you describe. Last month I changed my gear oil to Amsoil 75w-90 and I thought this was causing the problem. I notice it made this groan when I was doing figure 8's in a parking lot to work in the gear oil. I thought it needed friction modifier, so I added a bottle and that didn't help.
So I complained to Amsoil and they sent me a free case of 80w-90, they said this will fix the noise. So today I changed the gear lube again and the groan is still there after doing the figure 8's again, so I know it's not the gear lube.
What the hell could this be??

Message: I'm experiencing the same rear end whine around 45mph. I first noticed it around 1500 miles. Talk about pissed! I took it to the shop and they inspected the rear differential backlash, but didn't find anything out of spec. Then they insisted it was the roof racks, but that's not the case because I noticed the whining noise before I installed the racks. then their second guess what tire noise. I don't know what to think.
