Message: I have the whine too. Also a bit of a grinding noise. A friend who has the same 2000 as I do said that his dealer in Illinois said that the wrong fluid is in the rear end from thefactory. So I had my dealer change fluids, over their objections, and that helped a lot. The friend then said that to get rid of the noise entirely I needed to have the dealer add an additive which I did and that stopped it. Several thousand miles later it came back a little bit and the dealer first said that I needed a new rear end for $1,600!!! The service writer and a friend of mine in parts said just to change the fluids every so ofter and forget it. Glad to hear others have the same problem.

Message: Well I know this is an old post but between 50 and 60 mph theres that whine. I thought it was just my truck. Its kinda comforting knowing its not just my truck. What I would like to know is if I switch to 4.10 gears will I most likely get rid of this noise?

Message: If you only hear this when you have your foot on the gas and quits when you let up, have your U-joints checked out.

Message: Why do I need to get my U joints checked if it only does it between 50 and 60 mph. And yes it does only whine at those speeds with my foot on the gas, but its been doing that since I had it at 23 k miles. It now has 41k.

Message: Mine whine's a lot too around 45-50 mph. Oh wait that's the 4.56's in my rear...HEHEHE
It's normal for a big gear. Usually with stock gears it's time for a fluid swap or you need to pick up some limited slip additive(friction modifier).

Message: Rear end whine can be result of either bearings or ring/pinion clearance issues. Service manual decribes procedure to differentiate between two sources. I had Dodge change leaking pinion seal after reading procedure in manual. (Torque on pinion nut critical)3,000 miles later the rear end was whining. On return they said pinion bearings bad, but not their fault. They wanted $1,300.00 to replace bearings. Had specialty shop do complete rebuild (ring/pinion, bearings) for $900.00. Pinion bearings found in very poor condition and some pitting on 1 axle bearing. 75,000 mile on 01Quad,4.7,4x4,3.92ls. Fluid was changed at 25,000 to synthetic and again at 50,000. Service manual reccomends synthetic if veh. used for towing. Friction modifier added at each change. My 92 Dak whined excessively, but is still going with over 200,000 miles!

Message: My 99 3.92 is experienceing the same noises. Whineing plus a constant grind. I believe it's a combination of cause and effect. Backlash was actually to tight from the factory. Caused pinion bearing to fail and the carriers folowed suit. I'm replaceing the whole works in the next couple of weeks. I'm going to put in an Auburn and and all new bearings. Surprisingly the wear pattern on the gears is very good so I'm going to leave them.

Message: Just finished installing new bearings and Auburn differential. Turns out the backlash was to tight from the beginning. .003 was the reading we got when we tore it down. Factory says it should be .006 to .010. Backlash being to tight cause the whine. Pinion bearing number one was gouged from a piece of metal coming through the oil passage. That was the grinding noise. Put in the auburn even though it didn't need it. So if anybody needs a perfectly good Dana Trac-loc. Ive got one cheap. Long story short repaced all bearings re used the ring and pinion. They patterned fine. Set the backlash to .09 Better to be a little loose as long as patter is good. Guess what No Noise!!! I don't have to turn the radio up anymore unless I want to.

Message: Well it depends on how confident you feel in your ability to read instructions. A good description of backlash and how to adjust it can be found on the Auburn gear web site. Download the instructions for installing the differential. It goes through all the steps. To find the proper measurements for the backlash on the 81/4 rearend go to the richmond gear website. The tools you need to do the job are a socket set, Torque wrench and Chrysler tool no.4164. and a dial caliper. You'll know better if your comfortable doing it after you read the instructions on the Auburn. Good Luck!!

Message: dodge posi carriers have clips that fall out/when they fall they get into the gears and chew the teeth/this causes the rear end to whine and often rounds the abs gear and sends a bad signal to the ABS sensor and the speedomiter will also bounce/you will have to replace the ring and pinion and most likely the carrier and bearings/continued whining is corrected in the backlash adjustment/if it whines on acceleration continued to adjust out(usually past .006) if it begins to whine on decceleration you've gone too far (usually beyond .010) these are sensitive and sometimes impossible to get just right/the whining will not hurt and may go away after the new gears develop a wear pattern

Message: Mine only whines under steady light load (straight flat road) at around 50 MPH.. give is barely any gas, or let of and it's gone..
You can barely tell it does it, but I listen for it... It seems to be getting a little quieter over the years though..
Just my .02
